Alicia Keys recently responded to an inquiry about how she must have felt when a fan held and kissed her during her performance of “Empire State of Mind”. The singer admitted to being startled – and believe me, she did look it in the video – but restrained herself from being too critical of her overzealous fan.

Yes, Alicia Keys has got this overwhelming feeling to her songs and performances, but celebrities are people too, and awkward moments are, after all, awkward moments.

While performing at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Monday, the 41-year-old singer-songwriter walked through the audience, close enough for one of the concertgoers to grab her face and give her a smooch on the cheek.

Hollywood Unlocked shared the video of the moment, writing in the caption: “#SocialiteSoundOff: We love this song too, but damn, lady! #Socialites, was this fan doing too much by kissing #AliciaKeys on the cheek?!”

At the time when it happened, Keys was singing her empowering song “Empire State of Mind”, and she obviously looked a little shaken by the incident.

The Grammy award winner, who was tagged in the comment, said: “Trust me, I was like what the F—!!!!!!!! Don’t she know what time it is???” the hitmaker wrote.

Alicia Keys – On Not Recalling An Awkward Interaction During A 2009 Show With Jay-Z

Let’s not blame “Empire State of Mind”, but the song was also the soundtrack to another incident dating back many years ago. In 2009, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z took to the stage to perform their hit single “Empire State of Mind”, when Lil Mama (born Niatia Jessica Kirkland) crashed the MTV VMAs stage during their performance.

Keys later said she has no recollection of the event. “Basically, I remember absolutely nothing,” she told Complex last year. “I think I was so focused on performing. Because when you perform, it’s a lot. You gotta hit it. You gotta nail it. You gotta kill it. It has to be perfect.”

Since the incident, Lil Mama has said that she’s tried to reach out personally to both stars but didn’t manage to get through to them. However, Alicia Keys later made it clear that she’s forgiven her.
