Rumors of a tenth Taylor Swift album have been plaguing Swifties for weeks, but that she should confirm the album’s release date onstage, whilst receiving the award for video of the year, was nothing short of a magical moment.

13 is the lucky number. 13 is the number of tracks on this album, and guess what? They were written at various times over the course of several years. We know how Taylor Swift usually approaches a project. Once she’s got a theme, her songs generally linger around that theme, and the songs are written around the same time period.

However, the only promised theme of “Midnights”, the poignant name of the album, is that they were all written in the middle of the night, during sleepless nights.

After receiving her third award of the night, the star decided to share plans for a brand new album with fans, much to the delight of the people present.

“I had sort of made up my mind that if you were going to be this generous and give us this, I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand-new album comes out Oct. 21st,” Swift said in her speech before teasing that she would be releasing more details at midnight.

Later on, Swift would go on to share further details, including the name of the album, with fans on social media.

“We lie awake in love and in fear,” she wrote, Aug. 29, over a gloomy picture of herself, “in turmoil and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t – right this minute – about to make some fateful life-altering mistake.”

She went on to note that these songs were actually written in the middle of the night, “a journey through terrors and sweet dreams.” She then explained that the songs will explore the “demons” anyone encounters during a sleepless night. But she also offers hope as she writes, “…hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve… we’ll meet ourselves.”

At the moment, whilst she’s shared a meaningful cover art for the album – which shows her watching a lit lighter, her eyes covered in shimmery blue eyeshadow – she’s yet to name the track titles.
