It’s been over a decade since the world lost one of the greatest artists of recent memory: Amy Winehouse. Next year, a biopic that will delve deep into the meteoric success of Amy Winehouse will land in cinemas, with Sam Taylor-Johnson at the helm.
Amy Winehouse “Back to Black” Biopic Details
On Tuesday, Focus Features announced that Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” will be coming to cinemas across the country on May 10.
Written by Matt Greenhalgh and directed by “Fifty Shades of Grey’s” Sam Taylor-Johnson – the duo last collaborated on the successful 2009’s “Nowhere Boy” – the movie will focus on the success of Winehouse’s last studio album and how it forever changed her life and cemented her status as a bonafide musician.
She will be played onscreen by breakout actress Marisa Abela, with Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan and Lesley Manville also among the cast.
Despite dying in 2011 at the height of her fame, she is still considered one of the greatest artists in history and an inspiration for many others. She sold over 30 million records worldwide prior to her untimely death.
Focus is set to distribute the biopic in the US, with Universal Pictures International handling international distribution, excluding Germany, the UK, France, Aus/NZ, Benelux, Scandinavia and Poland, which will be handled by StudioCanal.
According to the distributor, “‘Back to Black’ is a never-before-seen glimpse into Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, ‘Back to Black.’
Told from Amy’s perspective, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time.”
The Legacy of Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse continues to be one of the major stars inspiring the new generation of popstars, despite only releasing two albums during her lifetime.
She had a very public battle with substance abuse and her mental illness was well documented. In July 23, 2011, the five-time Grammy award winner succumbed to alcohol poisoning.
Since the film was made with the support of Winehouse’s estate, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing, fans can expect to be treated to the best of her music as they watch the biopic.
