Amy Winehouse‘s latest biopic may have been approved by her estate and it may have also boosted her ‘Back to Black’ album, fans are not amused by it. Many called it “revolting,” claiming that the producers only wanted to “exploit” and “sensationalize” her story for their own pockets.
Fans of Amy may remember that she’d already had a major falling out with her father prior to her untimely death due to alcohol overdose, but they’re still not happy with the way the movie handled both her relationship with her father and her legacy with the press.

Actress Marisa Abela didn’t quite get why fans are furious over her depiction of the famous singer.
Even though Marisa tried her best to mimic Amy’s mannerisms and the makeup crew did a fine job replicating Amy’s signature beehive, swirling shoulder tattoos and heavy eye makeup, fans weren’t happy with the movie that had been lauded as exploring her “intense journey to fame.”
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Marisa touched on the controversies, saying, “It was a lot to deal with. I very quickly shut everything off and tried to focus on doing a good job – that was the most important thing.”
She continued, “But it did surprise me: I had thought people who love Amy would have wished for more kindness, gentleness and generosity towards her. It also makes sense that people feel tightly connected to that legend of her and might want to keep ownership over it.”
Perhaps it was the tragic nature of the biopic that riled fans, and if it was, Marisa was ready to defend it.
“With hindsight, it’s difficult not to view Amy’s story as a tragic one. Her story has a tragic ending, and tragedy throughout. But Amy’s life didn’t just happen to her,” Abela added. “She created a world of music that people appreciate and enjoy, and it’s about bringing people back to the girl from Camden who changed the world with her music.”
Marisa, who did her own singing for the movie, said she worked so hard to be able to make something that would be a true tribute to Amy Winehouse, whose music continues to inspire a whole new generation of artists.
Apart from singing and working with a coach to be able to mimic Amy’s movements during performances, she also learned to play guitar for the role.
