There’s no denying that lines are falling in pleasant places for the Spiderman actor Andrew Garfield. The man is steadily climbing greater heights back to back. No sooner had he gotten a Primetime Emmy nomination for his role as Detective Jeb Pyre in Under the Banner of Heaven, than he got another slot to star as British entrepreneur and billionaire Richard Branson in Hot Air, a limited series produced by Universal International Studios, according to an exclusive from Deadline.
Andrew Garfield — About The Movie “Hot Air”
The project is said to be a six-part limited series titled Hot Air, it’s going to be based on the book Dirty Tricks by investigative journalist Martyn Gregory, according to the outlet, with multiple platforms in the running to acquire the series.
The film Hot Air will be directed by Deadpool 2 and Hobbs and Shaw, a Fast and Furious spinoff director David Leitch and written by Paddington 2 screenwriter Jon Croker.
The premise of the series will center around Branson and the rise of his company, Virgin Airways, and the conflict he faces as British Airways campaigns against him.
The source material tells the wild tale of Virgin Airways, which Branson founded in 1984. Specifically, the book details how Virgin became one of the world’s top airlines after surviving an attempted smear campaign at the hands of British Airways, which tried using its staffers to impersonate Virgin employees to gain information about the airline and, ultimately, get them to switch to British Airways.
In the end, Branson sued British Airways and ultimately won, forcing them to pay Virgin’s legal costs plus damages. In 1999, Branson sold a 49% stake in Virgin Airways to Singapore Airlines, a sale valued at more than $1.4 billion.
More recently, Branson made headlines for becoming the first billionaire to travel to space. In July, the 70-year-old launched the Unity 22 mission on Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo VSS Unity. Branson vowed to start commercial flights with paying customers later in 2022.
Andrew Garfield’s Other Accolades
Alongside his recent Primetime Emmy nomination, Garfield has also been previously nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in both Hacksaw Ridge, directed by Mel Gibson, and Tick, Tick… Boom! directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

However, the actor is best known for his role as Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man series from 2012 to 2014, before eventually returning to the character in the multiversal crossover film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire. With Leitch at the helm of the project and with Garfield at the center, Hot Air could serve as a fascinating deep look into Branson’s feud with British Airways.
Garfield and Croker will be executive producing the series alongside Leitch, Kelly McCormick, and Dan Seligmann from 87North, Babak Anvari and Lucan Toh of Two&Two, and StoryFirst’s Michael Grade, Peter Gerwe, and Ivan Dunleavy.
Due to the series still being in its early stages of development, no release date has been set yet.
