Multi-award winning actress Angelina Jolie has remarkably used her voice and platform in recent times to campaign against the horrible situation in Afghanistan and to plead for compassion towards refugees.
In an effort to ensure that all humans enjoy their basic rights, and yes even the little ones, Jolie has written a book with Amnesty International that aims to make children acquainted with their rights.
Angelina Jolie Pens Powerful New Book Eith Human Rights Lawyer
Geraldine Van Bueren, a human rights lawyer and one of the drafters of the 1989 U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, teamed up with Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie to write “Know Your Rights and Claim Them”. The book is meant to educate kids with the knowledge to fight injustices safely.
“So many children are in harm’s way across the world, and we’re simply not doing enough,” Jolie explained to Reuters in an interview. “These are their rights, decided years ago based on what would make them healthy, balanced, safe and stable adults.”
Jolie, a special envoy for U.N. refugee agency UNHCR, wants to provide kids with the right tools to not only recognize when adults are overstepping their rights, but to know their rights as a young person anywhere in the world.
She also said that she hopes the book will draw the government’s attention back to their commitment to the global treaty which promised to protect children’s civil, social, political and economic rights.
“We spent a lot of time blocking those rights, so this book is to help the kids have a tool book to say ‘these are your rights, these are things you need to question to see how far you, depending on your country and circumstance, are from accessing those rights, what are your obstacles, others that came before you and fought, ways you can fight.’ So it’s a handbook to fight back.”
Angelina Jolie Points Out The Dangers Of Not Having Children Know And Understand Their Rights
Jolie, who is also a mother to six, further explained that she put up the U.N. convention in her home for the sake of her children, but was surprised to learn that her home country, the U.S., has not ratified it.
“That infuriated me and made me start to question what does that mean? So for each country, what is this idea of, you have the right to an education … but then why is it so many children are out of school? Why is it the girls in Afghanistan are being harmed if they go?” she said.

The book addresses identity, justice, education and protection from harm, among many other issues. It also aims to provide guidance on how one can safely become an activist, along with a glossary of terms and organizations.
“Through the book, you have to find your own path forward, because we are very concerned about the safety of children. We don’t want children just running around screaming for their rights and putting themselves in danger,” Jolie said.
The book debuted in Britain on Sept. 2, and is available for pre-order in other countries.
“We’re going to find that some adults in some countries are going to block the book and the children will find it so I think that’s how it’s going to reach more children,” Jolie said.
