Angelina Jolie latest role allowed her to reach into her life-long experiences and emotions in order to bring forth a character that has lived in every sense of the word. She shared that she related to the character’s struggle and her unbreakable spirit as she endured literally jumping through fire to find a purpose.
She did have one drawback to playing the character, as she was forced to bury her mother instincts so that she can play the character with all the realness that was required.
Angelina Jolie Shares That Her Latest Role Provided A “Healing” Experience For Her
On May 14, we can get to watch Jolie’s latest survival action thriller, Those Who Wish Me Dead, but before that day arrives, Jolie has decided to open our eyes to how the character she portrayed in the movie, Hannah Faber, changed her and how her life experiences affected the character.
It was on an on-set interview with Entertainment Tonight that the 3-time Golden Globe Awards actress shared about her experiences playing this broken woman still trying to get over the guilt of her failure to save three people from a fire.
“I am drawn to people who have been through something and are broken and then find their way forward and overcome it,” said Jolie, 45. “As an artist, it’s very healing to play people like that. She’s been very healing for me because you just get so broken and then you stand back up.”
She made it clear that though the movie may feel more “like a great thriller” and “a great adventure across an unusual terrain inside a great fire,” it’s really an “emotional film” beneath the surface.
“It’s about people who have a great impact on each other and change each other,” Jolie said. “Emotionally and practically, they go through the fire.”
Angelina Getting Into Character
Jolie further talked about her character, Hannah Faber, in the movie, how she worked hard to become the “gritty” character, also praising her 12-year-old co-star’s performance in the movie.
The movie is directed by Oscar nominee, Taylor Sheridan (Hell or Highwater), and adapted from a book of the same name by Michael Koryta. Screenplay writers include Michael Koryta, Charles Leavitt, and Sheridan.

The movie portrays the rigorous trials of the smokejumper Hannah, who encounters a little boy named Connor who had no one in the world to turn to.
“She carries a lot of guilt, and is quite broken,” Jolie described her character to PEOPLE in a recent interview. “She’s a smokejumper and a bit of an adrenaline junkie, but she’s also somebody that has experienced tragedy, and she feels responsible for it.”
The mom of six, actress, and humanitarian didn’t mind getting “sweaty” for the role.
“I was so happy to be pushed to just toughen up and get dirty and sweaty, and do things I’ve never done and feel very capable,” Jolie added.
As for her 14-year-old co-star who has now basically won something relative to an Oscar, Jolie’s affectionate praise, Jolie revealed that she had so much fun with him. “I think people will really respond to him in this film. He has a light and great energy. He can become very emotional and weep about something, and he can also jump over a building and dodge bullets and love it.”
