The multi-award winning actress was sickened by President Biden’s withdrawal of Afghan troops and called it a complete failure. The actress, who has garnered over 7.5 million followers, came on the social media platform to use it to lend a voice to the voiceless.
“Right now, the people of Afghanistan are losing their ability to communicate on social media and to express themselves freely,” Jolie wrote in the very first post she shared on her Instagram page. “So I’ve come on Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights.”
Now with two posts on her Instagram page, Jolie, a special envoy to the U.N., is highlighting the importance of recognizing the rising number of displaced people all over the world.
Angelina Jolie Highlights the Rising Number of Displaced People
Angelina Jolie is finally on Instagram, and not just to post pictures of herself or those of her family and friends – though we’ll be happy to see those pictures – but to showcase the pains that affect millions of lives all over the world.
“I started working with displaced people because I believe passionately in human rights,” the actress captioned a post with series of pictures depicting children and people displaced from their homes. “Not out of charity, but out of a deep respect for them and their families, and all they continue to overcome, despite so much persecution, inequality and injustice.”
The Numbers Are Rising
Jolie shared a series of images that highlight the number of displaced people around the world and how that number is steadily growing.
“Human-rights abuses, war, and climate change have displaced just over 1% of HUMANITY,” one of her slideshow pictures read. “Today almost 82.4 million people are forcibly displaced” and “almost half are children”.
“That’s nearly twice as many as a decade before. Some crisis, like the war in Afghanistan, have lasted for decades,” the “Maleficent” actress continued. “Others, like the conflict in Ethiopia, are more recent.”
“They all have in common the violence and denial of rights that leave innocent families with no choice but to flee. At which point will we be concerned enough to address the environmental devastation, conflict and human rights abuses that fuel these crises?”
Angelina Jolie concluded her message by inviting people to join her in learning more about the problems that refugees face by visiting the UN page dedicated to it.
