However, Angelina also turned to Instagram to highlight her cause. And the actress posted a screenshot of what she wants the world to understand about both the girls and women. But Jolie took a vow in the process. Get all the details below.
Angelina Jolie Pleads For Afghan Women And Girls In Distress
Looking back on her own experiences, Angelina revealed her knowledge of Afghan women in her essay. And the 47-year-old mom of six explained her worries about life for the struggling women. Jolie’s essay comes just 12 months after U.S. troops withdrew and the Taliban took over the country , reported People.
Prior to the new regime, Angelina met a refugee who had fled to Rome just “months from qualifying as a doctor.” And that refugee and sisters no longer could achieve their educational goals. “Overnight, they and 14 million other Afghan women and girls lost their right to go to high school or university,” shared Jolie.
But the women’s plight didn’t end there. And Angelina shared that the women also got blocked from “their right to work, and their freedom of movement.” However, the actress also noted what the new regime signified for Afghan women. After making tremendous progress for the last 20 years, the women’s achievements got “overturned with unimaginable speed,” noted Jolie.
Angelina Jolie Vows On Instagram To Continue Her Fight
But Jolie also praised the women in Afghanistan. “The daughters of Afghanistan are extraordinary for their strength, resilience, and resourcefulness,” noted the actress. However, Angelina didn’t hold back on describing the horrors she viewed in the country. For instance, the mom of six noted that Afghan women suffer beatings in public and kidnapping. Some even get forced to marry Taliban leaders or get imprisoned over their politics.
However, the actress emphasized that she does not stand alone in supporting these women. And she noted, “Despite the dangers, the greatest resistance to the reversal of women’s rights in Afghanistan has not come from foreign powers. But [it comes] from Afghan women themselves, who have taken to the streets,” she added. As a result, Jolie views it as “the worst possible step” for the U.S. and other allies to pull back troops from Afghanistan.
“There have been different chapters in Afghanistan’s history and many dark moments. This is undoubtedly one of them. But I’m sure that this isn’t the final chapter. The dream of a pluralistic, open Afghanistan built on the equal efforts and free voices of all its people may seem to be a distant hope. But I know it’s possible. This does not end here,” Jolie summed up.
And Angelina took a vow in her Instagram caption. “Sharing this piece I wrote for @time in honor of Afghan women, one year after the fall of the Afghan government. It cannot end here. #afghanistan,” promised Jolie.
