Anne Hathaway – Says She Kissed Ten Men Because She Didn’t Want To Be Labeled “Difficult”

Anne Hathaway is the star of the moment. Apart from going viral for her androgynous look, which she rocked for the cover shoot of V magazine, she’s also blown the mind of the internet just by telling us how the industry used to be back in the old days.

During her chat with V magazine for the cover feature, the “Princess Diaries” star shared that in the 2000s, “it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry. Which is actually the worst way to do it.”

She continued: “I was told, ‘We have 10 guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’ And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ Because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross.”

Hathaway, who went on to win an Oscar for her spectacular role in “Les Misérables,” remembered accepting to carry out the request to safeguard her budding carrier.

“And I was so young and terribly aware how easy it was to lose everything by being labeled ‘difficult’, so I just pretended I was excited and got on with it. It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me. It was just a very different time and now we know better.”

Anne Hathaway – On How Chemistry Auditions Are Carried Out These Days

Change can be good, and in this case, it’s even better. Within a few years, Hollywood’s chemistry audition system went from “gross” to beautiful.

Hathaway, who will shortly be seen in the romantic comedy “The Idea of You,” went on to reveal the new way they engineer these tests.

“We asked each of the actors coming in to choose a song that they felt their character would love,” she said, “that they would put on to get my character to dance, and then we’d do a short little improv.”

“I was sitting in a chair like we had come in from dinner or a walk or something, we pressed play, and we just started dancing together.”

She then revealed how her now-costar on the movie Nicholas Galitzine had chosen a song by rock band Alabama Shakes, fronted by Brittany Howard, and they clicked. “I heard Brittany’s voice and I just started smiling,” recalled Hathaway.

“And he saw me smile, so he relaxed, and we just started dancing. Nobody was showing off. Nobody was trying to get the gig. We were just in a space dancing. I looked over and Michael Showalter, our director, was beaming. Spark!”

Galitzine previously opened up about his experience auditioning for the role, saying that he found it “incredibly intimidating.”

Despite feeling that, he did admit that “there was something almost spiritual that kind of happened there where I felt this immediate connection to Annie, and we had a simpatico and a shared sense of humour and it was just very easy.”
