As we march into the New Year, Ellie Goulding is sharing some of her highs and lows of the previous year, and she wants fans to know they’re not alone in feeling “sad”.
In April 2021, the “Slow Grenade” singer welcomed her first child, Arthur Ever Winter Jopling. She called the experience of motherhood “the greatest joy I know”.
The year also saw the 34-year-old publish her very first book. She also rounded out the year with a special Christmas performance at ITV’s “Together at Christmas” carol, hosted by the Duchess of Cambridge.
2021 was her “best” year and yet, somehow, it wasn’t. See what she has to say about her “anxiety” and panic attacks.

2021 was a year filled with happy and big moments for Ellie Goulding, and while she admitted that it’s the “very best year” of her life, she did open up about not being “alright”.
It’s not because she doesn’t have a positive and supportive family and friends, as she has “a dog and a cat that love me, I have friends that really love me, and I have a husband that adores and supports me every single day.”
Despite the strong and happy relationships she has with her family and friends, she went on to detail how “this year has also been the hardest of my life.”
“I’ve struggled daily, nightly, hourly with a kind of panic I didn’t even know existed,” the musician shared in a slideshow on Instagram. “While the moments of being on stage in front of all of you have been some of the most exhilarating and calming, this year I have been struggling.”
She further described how her “anxiety has dictated quite a lot of my life and career,” admitting that the reality makes her “feel sad”. Continuing, she said “it has also made me who I am.”
“Sometimes at my most terrified, when I feel there is no escape from the sheer panic and dread in my heart and brain, I remind myself that I can feel. I feel so much and that is how I have got to this place in my life.”

The “Love Me Like You Do” singer used the Instagram post to update her fans on her well-being – a state she revealed is currently “not good”.
“I want to tell you this on the last day of this year because so many of you have been asking how I’m doing and often do not get a reply. It’s because I’ve been too scared to admit that the answer is, not very good,” she wrote. “I feel like something is broken inside – something that has been echoed deeply by the few I have opened up to.”
She continued, “This is something so so many people have gone through, you may be going through right now, or might go through in the future – and I just wanted to say, and I have to remind myself all the time, that it’s not just you, it’s not just me. Crippled by anxiety.”
Goulding then shifted her message to reflect other people out there who may feel like she does, telling them that they’re not alone.

“For those that are in this right now, we’re together and we can get through this – most importantly, by talking. Talking and opening up is the hardest, and the best thing you can do.”
Using a more positive tone to describe the New Year, she wrote: “Life is a precious thing and seeing Arthur grow every day gives me so much hope. … Let’s get through this together. 2022 is going to be a bright year. Positive energy. Together.”
“Signing off (for a bit) and sending so much love, as ever, to you all xx,” Ellie Goulding concluded the heartfelt message.
