Austin Butler Said He Was ‘Bedridden’ After Playing ‘Elvis’

Austin Butler Said He Was 'Bedridden' After Playing ‘Elvis’I’m not an actor but I sure know that playing a real-life character or trying to be someone else in a movie is exhausting. Now, Austin Butler who is featured in the upcoming movie ‘Elvis’ said that when he was done shooting the film, he was bedridden for almost a week.

Butler revealed that after he was bedridden for almost a week, two weeks later he fell sick again, and after his recovery, he went on to shoot another film but while at it, he was lost, as he couldn’t understand himself and who he was anymore. “Then I flew to London to film something else and I was just going, ‘I don’t know who I am, I don’t know what’s going on,’ you know?” Austin elaborated.

The movie ‘Elvis’ is a biological musical drama of the life of, the legendary Elvis Presley, the musician. It is based on the kind of life Elvis lived and how he began his musical career. Just as Taron Egerton played Elton John in ‘Rocketman’ which is the biological musical drama of the life of Elton John who is a musician, and Rami Malek played Freddie Mercury in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ which is also a biological musical drama of the life of Freddie Mercury, so also did Austin Butler play Elvis Presley in ‘Elvis.’

Austin Butler — Speaking On The Most Challenging Part Of Playing ‘Elvis’

Butler who had an interview at Graceland courtesy of “Extra’s” Alecia Davies, replied when asked by Alecia what he found most difficult while he was playing Elvis, “For me, I realized that it’s all gotta come from inside… but then you have the very technical things of what you want certain performances to be identical.”

Butler revealed that at some point he had to reach out to Rami Malek who played Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody” for advice, and admitted that Malek did indeed help him tremendously by advising Butler to see himself as the real Elvis by merging with his soul. “He really helped me with the feeling of the most important thing being your soul merging with his, and then something new happens that we haven’t seen before.”

Alecia went on to ask Baz Luhrmann why Butler was chosen for the role since Butler’s strongest contender for the Elvis role was Harry Styles, Baz said it was because the age at which Butler lost his mother was also the same age Elvis Presley lost his mother, so Butler and Elvis kinda have that in common. “He lost his mom at the same age as Elvis. It’s almost like it’s his path to play this role.” Baz also noted that Austin “disappears into the humanity of Elvis Presley” and was willing to his life on hold for two years for the part.

Austin Butler — What Elvis’s Wife Thinks Of Butler’s Performance

Ain’t nothing sweeter than putting your all into something and getting a well deserving clap for it. Now, Elvis Presley’s ex-wife Priscilla Presley didn’t hide her uncertainty as to whether Butler could play the role of her Ex-husband Elvis Presley well enough, well, let’s just say that at the end, Butler proved himself good enough not just to Priscilla but to her daughter Lisa as well.

Butler who was so emotional after having met with the wife of the legendary Elvis Presley whose real-life he attempted to depict in a movie said, “I walked down the hall afterward with tears in my eyes… I can’t believe that I just got to meet her. It was really surreal.” As for what he had to say about Priscilla’s praises for his performance, Butler said, “I have no words. I feel so happy.”

Butler is not the only actor Priscilla Presley is impressed with in the movie, Olivia DeJonge who co-starred with Butler as she played the role of Elvis’ wife Priscilla, also won the heart of Priscilla. Olivia shared, “I felt like I could breathe again after three years when I heard she loved it and was giving it her stamp of approval.”

When asked how she was able to perform Priscilla’s character so well, Olivia replied, “I didn’t really get to touch base with her until after we shot the film, so for me, it was really just about a lot of research. I read her book 100 times. I watched all her interviews. I chatted a lot with Baz and Austin because they were just such a wealth of knowledge.“
