Ben Affleck doesn’t necessarily think that his Jennifer Lopez divorce was particularly motivated by any one scandal. Remember when we were convinced Affleck ran for dear life due to Lopez’s affinity for the media? Well, the true story is exactly not like that.
Ben Affleck Says His Relationship With Jennifer Lopez Struggled To Survive Like Any Other One
So much for a highly celebrated second chance romance story, or so some fans would say immediately they heard the news that Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck were breaking the knot – I’m so sorry, I couldn’t resist throwing in that joke.
The actor spoke with GQ in a wide-ranging interview for their April issue. During their chat, he touched on things that happened within his short-lived marriage to Jennifer Lopez. First of all, he cleared any onus regarding his involvement with project ‘Greatest Love Story Never Told.’
In the documentary itself, Affleck had made us aware that he wasn’t completely onboard with the idea of making the documentary, even though he took it upon himself to direct it.
“Part of it was, ‘Okay, if I’m going to participate in this, I want to try to do it in an honest way and in a way that’s interesting.’ Because I thought it was an interesting examination,” said Affleck, 52.
While he praised Lopez’s expert handle on fame – she has “handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have” – he explained that “My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers.”
“As happens in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things,” the ‘Accountant 2’ star continued. “And so I thought, Oh, this is interesting because how do you reconcile that? Because … I love and support this person. I believe in them. They’re great. I want people to see that.”
For example, Affleck recalled saying the lines ” ‘You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, “Well, I don’t like going out in the water.” ‘ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship.’ “
Needless to say, he still stands by these words to this very day, even though many believe it was the documentary and the explicit album, ‘This Is Me…Now,’ that sent Affleck racing for the hills.
“And I think it’s important to say that wasn’t the cause of some major fracture. It’s not like you can watch that documentary and go, ‘Oh, now I understand the issues that these two had,’ “ he noted.
Not that Affleck is completely averse to talking to the press – if he was we wouldn’t be getting this tidbits – but if he’s ever going to do it, he wants it to be honest.
As he put it himself, he doesn’t mind talking about his “personal life a little … as long as my actual feelings and intentions and beliefs are communicated, which I hope I was clear that really [Lopez] is somebody I have a lot of respect for.”
“A little” being the defining word, maybe Jennifer Lopez sharing love letters he wrote her several years ago was going a bit too far, do you think?
