Just because you both are used to being on camera doesn’t mean one of you can’t be reserved and private. Jennifer Lopez is very much aware of this fact because while she doesn’t mind the paparazzi, her husband Ben Affleck is the opposite— a very private person.
Affleck and Lopez first got engaged in 2002 but few days before their wedding in 2003, they broke up. Twenty years later, they walked down the aisle.
The “Batman” actor revealed in his wife’s documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” that before they rekindled their love in 2021, he made sure that he and the “Marry Me” actress met each other halfway due to their personality differences.
“I had a very firm sense of boundaries initially around the press,” said Affleck in the documentary before continuing, “While Jen, I don’t think objected to it in the way I did. I very much did object to it. Getting back together, I said, ‘Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a relationship on social media.'”
He went on to add, “And then I sort of realized it’s not a fair thing to ask. It’s sort of like you’re gonna marry a boat captain and you go, ‘Well, I don’t like the water.’ We’re just two people with kind of different approaches trying to learn to compromise.”
The star of “Good Will Hunting” made the revelation from the perspective of someone who called off his engagement with “The Mother” actress because of “the massive amount of scrutiny around our private life.”
Ben Affleck — On Affleck’s Support In The Documentary
Lopez also shared how uncomfortable her husband was about filming the documentary but had to compromise because of his love for her. “I don’t think he’s very comfortable with me doing all of this,” said the singer-songwriter before adding, “But he loves me, he knows I’m an artist and he’s gonna support me in every way he can.”
She continued, “You can’t stop me from making the music I made and writing the words that I wrote. That’s gonna happen, and he doesn’t want to stop me. He wants to do that. But that doesn’t mean he’s kind of comfortable being the muse.” The star of 2003’s “Daredevil” also shared how filming the documentary became an inspiration to his wife, “Jen was really inspired by this experience, which is how artists do their work,” he shared.
“They get inspired, their personal life. It moves you. I know as a writer and director, I certainly do the same things. But things that are private, I had always felt, are sacred and special because in part they’re private. So, this was something of an adjustment for me.”
