After 28 years of marriage and five children, Billy Ray Cyrus and wife Tish Cyrus are going their separate ways.

Months after Tish filed for divorce, it was revealed that the “Achy Break Heart” singer was dating the Australian singer-songwriter Firerose, a source connected with the family confirmed to PEOPLE on Wednesday.

“They’ve been dating for a little while,” the source shared. “They grew close while working on music together. It is what it is. He and Tish were over before he started dating her.”

Late last month, Billy Ray, 61, and Firerose sparked engagement rumors when she shared a picture to her socials wearing a diamond on her ring finger. However, neither Billy Ray nor Firerose’s press team have confirmed the rumors.

Firerose has pictures of Billy Ray Cyrus on her Instagram timeline dating back to August 2021, when they performed their collaboration “New Day”, for “Live with Kelly and Ryan”.

In August, Firerose seemingly went public with their relationship when she shared a birthday post dedicated to the country star.

“The world is a better place with you in it. Happy Birthday Billy❤” she captioned a selfie with the musician on Instagram.

Tish Files For Divorce From Billy Ray, Citing “Irreconcilable Differences”

In April, Tish filed for divorce from Billy, who she was married to for 28 years, citing “irreconcilable differences”. She also revealed that they hadn’t lived together for two years before she made the move to end the marriage, thereby making this their third separation in their 28 years of marriage.

The singer, who frequently collaborates with some of his musician children, married Tish in 1993. They share five children together: daughters Miley, 29, Noah, 22, and Brandi, 35, and sons Trace, 33, and Braison, 28.

A few days after they filed for divorce, the pair released a statement exclusively to PEOPLE via a spokesperson.

“It is after 30 years, five amazing children and a lifetime of memories, we have decided to go our separate ways — not with sadness, but with love in our hearts,” the joint statement read.”We have grown up together, raised a family we can be so proud of, and it is now time to create our own paths.”

“We will always be family and look forward to a continued and loving shared experience as friends and parents. We have not come to this decision lightly or quickly but with so much going on in the world, we wanted to provide some clarity and closure, so we can remain focused on what is important,” the statement continued. “With Love and Hope… Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus.”

Through the years, either Billy Ray or Tish have filed for divorce. The trend started in 2010 when Billy Ray filed for divorce.
