After Brad Pitt starred in multiple pretty boy roles, he became worried that he might get pigeon-holed playing the same roles in the same genres and set out to change it by starring in the gritty thriller “Kalifornia”. He wanted so badly to shift his acting direction.

Brad Pitt, 57, willingly chose to play the role of a psychopath Early Grayce in the 1993 American road thriller movie in order to separate himself from his previous roles and open up more chances to be cast in diverse roles.

In the movie, Brad Pitt departed from his rom-com boyish looks and smiles and took on the role of a psychopathic serial killer and “rapist”. He received praise for his spot-on acting in the movie and how he brought his character to live in a unique, touching and scary way. The film went on to get nominated for three Saturn Awards in 1994, including one for the Best Horror Film.

This would not be the last time that the two-time Golden Globe winner will take on the role of a dark and twisted villain, neither was it his last involvement in horror films, as he starred in the 1994 horror film Interview with the Vampire where he played a more “caring vampire” than his vampire antagonist counterpart, Lestat de Lioncourt, played by Tom Cruise.

Since then, he’s starred in many other genres including action movies with movies like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, where he starred opposite Angelina Jolie. The movie set was also notably the place where sparks allegedly started to fly for Brad Pitt and actress Angelina Jolie, even though Brad was still married to another actress, Jennifer Aniston, at the time.
