And oh, he mocked Tom Cruise‘s 2007 reboot of the hit movie. Do we agree with him?
Brendan Fraser Says “The Mummy” Wasn’t Made To Be “Scary”
Yes, we know Brendan. Anybody over the age of ten can hardly be scared of the movies in the original “The Mummy” franchise. Creepy? Yes, I’ll agree they’re creepy, and sometimes disgusting, but I don’t think “scary” is a word I’ll associate with it.
Back in the scene with his incredible performance in “The Whale”, for which he won an award and received a standing ovation, the 53-year-old told Variety that he’s open to playing Rick O’Connell, the adventurer in all three of the original “The Mummy” movies, “if someone came up with the right conceit”.
Fraser, alongside Rachel Weisz, starred in the first two films in “The Mummy’s” franchise: 1999’s “The Mummy” and 2001’s “The Mummy Returns”.
In 2008, “The Tomb Of the Dragon Emperor” was released, with Fraser appearing with Maria Bello this time round.
Speaking on Tom Cruise’s 2017 reboot, he said that “It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”
He also said that Cruise’s version was lacking of the “fun” of the original trilogy, adding, “I know how difficult it is to pull it off. I tried to do it three times.”
Tom Cruise’s “The Mummy” Reboot Director Calls Movie “The Biggest Failure Of My Life”
This is coming just a few months after the reboot’s director, Alex Kurtzman, confessed that his work on the franchise’s reboot was the “biggest failure of my life, both personally and professionally.”
“I tend to subscribe to the point of view that you learn nothing from your successes, and you learn everything from your failures,” Kurtzman, 49, said during an appearance on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast. “There’s about a million things I regret about it, but it also gave me so many gifts that are inexpressibly beautiful.”
Immediately the movie hit the theaters, it was met with numerous scathing reviews from renowned critics, with some calling it “dead on arrival” and others criticizing it as the “worst Tom Cruise movie ever.”
