Britney Spears is a free woman, even if she’s down a couple millions to achieve said freedom. Spears and her father reached an agreement last year over a legal dispute regarding her conservatorship.
Some quick refresher: a judge terminated Britney Spears’ 13-year conservatorship in November 2021. At the time, Spears claimed that the conservatorship had given her father control over her personal life and finances and that he had abused that power.
Despite the cries of fans to free Britney from the legal chokehold, it wasn’t until Britney and her legal team pushed back that a definite change was made. However, Jamie Spears didn’t walk away from the fight a desolate man. He got more than enough cash to settle his attorney fees.
All We Know About Britney Spears Suing Her Father Over the Conservatorship
In 2021, Britney got her life back. She also decided to pursue justice against certain family members she claimed were taking advantage of her situation.
According to Britney, her father Jamie had paid himself $6 million throughout his run as conservator. The conservatorship first came into effect as a temporary one in 2008, following a series of events that saw Britney acting out.
By the end of the year, Jamie had managed to turn it into a permanent one. It didn’t take many months after that for Jamie to decide that Britney was well enough to return to work, though he refused to grant her that same level of control over her private affairs.
On April 25, 2024, Britney and her father finally settled the lawsuit accusing him of financial misconduct as a conservator.
Even though Britney’s former attorney Matthew S. Rosengart objected to the “Toxic” hitmaker covering her father’s legal fees, the court ordered she pay Jamie’s outstanding legal fees, which amounted to $2.12 million.
When the settlement was reached last year, the terms agreed by both parties at the Los Angeles Superior Court was kept under wraps.
Britney Spears Paid This Much To Cover Her Father Jamie Spears’ Legal Fees
Nearly a year after both parties reached an agreement on Feb. 24, the details of Britney’s settlement with her father has been revealed.
Totaling $2.12 million, the pop princess deposited $500,000 into Saul Ewing’s U.S. Bank account (Hal Morris, the general counsel at the firm, signed the contract) and $1.62 million to Willkie Farr & Gallagher, paid into their Citibank account (partner Alex M. Weingarten signed).
She had 60 days to pay both fees in full, or she could possibly accrue more fees. It’s reported she paid them off before the deadline.
Britney and Jamie’s team both agreed that the payments would resolve any and all disputes in connection with the conservatorship proceedings.
