Britney Spears Recalls Iconic Python Performance, Says She Was Scared

There are some things that will never age out, and Britney Spears braving the fear of a python to give one of the most iconic performances of MTV VMAs’ history is one of them.

The singer recently reflected on that 2001 moment that’s grown to become a pivotal time in pop culture.

No matter how long it’s been since Britney Spears sang and shimmied her heart out on the MTV stage, it’s still a moment that pops up in conversation every now and then.

And its significance is not lost on Spears either.

“One of my favorite performances was with an albino python,” Spears shared on Instagram, Sept. 6, along a clip of the giant reptile on her shoulders.

“I still remember how scared I felt when I was handed this snake and took the stage !!!”

She then went on to reveal that more details of the snake dance features in her upcoming memoir, “The Woman In Me.”

Recently, Spears remembered the snake fondly and even asked about its whereabouts.

However, fast forward to 2016 from 2001 and Spears would never have walked out on any stage wearing a python around her neck like it was an accessory.

“It’s insane!” she told E! News during the 2016 interview. “Why did I do that?”

Asked whether she plans to do it again, her answer was a clear negative, “Hell, no! It’s so dumb. No! Never!”

Michael Hano Says Britney Spears’ Iconic Performance With the Python Was “Risky”

In 2021, the snake’s handler, Michael Hano, told Yahoo! Entertainment that Spears’ performance was a “risky” one because there was that chance the snake might have mistaken her for prey and bitten her.

Another thing he put right was the popular belief that the snake was an albino python, whereas in fact, it was an amelanistic Burmese python.

He also remembered telling Spear at the time, “You’re freakin’ Britney Spears, you know, if this thing bites you, I think my career is over.”
