Alongside these jeans, Shields will also be auctioning her script from “The Blue Lagoon” and her high school cheerleading sweater.
Reflecting on the auction, Shields shared her feelings, stating, “I am going to be an empty nester! I’m so sad. But now I’m going through all my closets and my things and am ready to give some of my special pieces away, like my Calvin Klein jeans. Can you imagine my waist was ever that small? It’s terrifying! I hope that somebody enjoys these just as much as I have and finds them as meaningful as I do. I can’t wait for someone to show these off!”
The Controversial 1980 Calvin Klein Campaign
The jeans in question gained notoriety as part of a Calvin Klein campaign featuring a then-15-year-old Shields. The tagline of the advertisement, “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing,” led to widespread controversy and criticism. The ad was deemed provocative and inappropriate by many, resulting in its ban on several television networks.
Shields, reflecting on the backlash, told Vogue in October 2021 that she found the criticism “ridiculous.”
She admitted to being naive at the time and didn’t perceive the tagline as having a sexual connotation. “I would say it about my sister, ‘Nobody can come between me and my sister,'” she explained.
Ongoing Love For Denim And Upcoming Auction
Despite the controversy, Shields maintains a deep affection for her jeans. In a conversation with USA TODAY earlier this year, she discussed her enduring love for denim.
“Sometimes I’m in the mood for a little bit of a lower rise and a slight bell. Sometimes I would like what’s really in now, which is high-waisted, button, straight leg,” she said.
She also mentioned her preference for cropped versions with kitten heels and expressed a shift away from skinny jeans, favoring styles that complement her over-the-knee boots and oversized sweaters. “I have so many pairs of jeans, and I’m constantly relooking at them, refolding them, seeing how I can repurpose them,” she added.
The auction, which includes other historical memorabilia, will be televised live, allowing global bidders to participate. The event will also showcase items from film legends and iconic movies, including artifacts from “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Godfather.”
