Christina Applegate Shares Surprising Coping Mechanism Amid Multiple Sclerosis Battle

Christina Applegate Shares Surprising Coping Mechanism Amid Multiple Sclerosis BattleChristina Applegate, the acclaimed actress known for her roles in Dead to Me and Anchorman, has been candid about her ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition she was diagnosed with in 2021. Recently, she revealed an unexpected source of comfort during this challenging time: reality television.

During an August 8 episode of This Life of Mine on SiriusXM, hosted by James Corden, Christina shared her surprising reliance on reality TV as a coping mechanism.

Christina’s All-Embracing Love For Reality TV

When asked if music played a role in helping her through her condition, she responded, “No, I find reality television very useful. That’s kind of it for me.”

The 52-year-old actress admitted that her fondness for reality TV isn’t something she hides. “Anyone who knows me well knows that it’s on 24/7 in my room,” Christina explained. “I don’t leave my room very often. I know that sounds really depressing, but it’s kind of like, I just need to sleep sometimes. Yeah, reality TV.

Christina doesn’t discriminate when it comes to her choice of shows. “Everything. Give me any of it,” she enthused. “Give me a Vanderpump Rules, give me a Below Deck, give me a [Real] Housewife, even give me Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsay—I’ll watch like nine seasons of that in two days.”

Applegate explained why she finds reality TV so compelling, especially in light of her MS diagnosis. “I love watching the imperfections of real people, really,” she shared. “Like wow, those people exist, I love that. That’s why I love reality TV, because they freak me out that they walk this earth acting like that.”

Humor, Another Crucial Coping Strategy for Christina

This isn’t the first time Christina has spoken about her journey with MS. Humor, she says, is another crucial part of how she manages her condition. “I make these jokes because if I don’t, I’ll suffocate,” she said during a March 2024 episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.

Despite the challenges, her spirit remains strong. After receiving a standing ovation at the 2023 Emmys, she humorously quipped to the audience, “You’re totally shaming me with disability by standing up.”

Humor continues to be a significant part of Christina’s coping strategy. During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Christina and Kelly bonded over using dark humor to deal with difficult situations.

Christina explained that humor helps her maintain a sense of normalcy, saying, “Of course, down on the inside, you feel things. But I choose the funny route to deflect and make people not be scared to be around me.”

Christina’s Shift in Career Focus

In addition to reality TV, Christina has also been focusing on other aspects of her life. Though she has had to step back from acting due to her MS, she remains active in other ways.

She has shared her plans to pivot into voice-over work, a move she hopes will provide stability for her daughter, Sadie.

During her downtime, Christina has been exploring new hobbies, including binge-watching shows she hadn’t previously seen, though watching herself on scChristina Applegate Shares Surprising Coping Mechanism Amid Multiple Sclerosis Battle
