So, Chappelle asked Rock if the slap was painful and Rock replied in the affirmative before complaining that Smith slapped him over a silly joke and it’s not as if the joke was a bad one, but it was one of the nicest jokes he has ever told. Chappelle then said that Smith has always presented himself to be a perfect person for the past thirty years but everything came crashing down at the Oscars because Smith has been masking his true self.
“Will did the impression of a perfect person for 30 years, and he ripped his mask off and showed us he was as ugly as the rest of us,” Chappelle went on to advise Smith not to attempt putting the mask back on because the damage had been done and Smith’s true self has been seen. “Whatever the consequences are … I hope he doesn’t put his mask back on again and lets his real face breathe. I see myself in both men.”
Dave Chappelle — About The Infamous Slap
Allow me to take you down memory lane a little. On Sunday, March 27, 2022, at the Oscars 94 Annual Academy Award, Chris Rock was called up to deliver a speech and also give the “Best Actor” award to Smith for his role in King Richard. When Rock came up, he made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett’s bald hair saying “Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it, all right?” Everyone present laughed at the joke except Jada who didn’t find it funny because her shaved hair was as a result of a medical condition she has.
When Smith saw that his wife wasn’t laughing, he walked up to Rock and delivered a sounding slap to Rock while screaming “Keep my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth.” Smith, after going on to win the Best Actor award for his role in King Richard that same night. Although Smith apologized for his actions that night, he didn’t apologize to Rock for the slap.
Two months after Smith’s attack on Rock, Dave Chappelle was attacked onstage during his “Netflix Is a Joke Presents: Dave Chappelle and Friends” performance at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday, May 3.
Dave Chappelle — About Dave’s Attack
While Chappelle was performing, a man seated in the audience rushed to the stage and tackled him. At the time, a footage was shown where Chappelle was on stage performing and a man at his right rushed up to him and tackled him to the floor. The man was then dragged away by security, according to a report by Hollywood Reporter.
The Los Angeles Police Department stated that the suspect was armed with a replica gun “that can eject a knife blade” when discharged correctly. It wasn’t immediately clear if the man tried to use the weapon. Police said that Chappelle was not injured in the incident.
Jamie Foxx, the Hollywood actor, was among those who ran to the stage to help after the incident. The LAPD has since identified the attacker as a 23-year-old man named Isaiah Lee, he was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and transported to a local hospital for treatment after the incident.
Chris Rock was present that day and said that when he witnessed Chappelle being attacked, for a while he thought the attacker was Will Smith.
So…last month, July 29, Will Smith made a video to apologize for his assault on Chris Rock and to also reply to the question of why he didn’t apologize to Rock at the Oscars, Smith explained that he did reach out to Rock so that he can directly apologize to Rock for Smith’s behavior at the Oscars but he was told that Rock is not yet ready to talk but will reach out to Smith when he is ready. Will Smith actually publicly apologized to Chris Rock in that video for his actions.
Last month, Rock revealed that he was asked to host the Oscars next year but he declined the offer.
