The star of “Never Been Kissed” David Arquette finally broke his silence on how his ex-wife and “Scream” co-star Courteney Cox’s fame contributed to the failure of their marriage.

David and Courteney met on the set of 1996’s Scream. Before that, Courteney was filming NBC’s hit rom-com “Friends” which lasted for 10 seasons, from 1994 to 2004. Courteney played Monica Geller on the show.

Before long, the show became one of the best romcoms of its time. David, 51, tied the knot with Courteney, 58, in 1999, and they gave birth to their daughter CoCo, 18, in 2004. In 2012, they filed for divorce and the following year their divorce was finalized.

“Yeah, absolutely. It’s difficult. … I have some of the traditional male things where I want to like, you know, provide and pick up the check and, you know, be the breadwinner,” he added, “In the acting world, in general, you’re always going on this roller coaster of popularity and not able to get a job.”

“So it’s like this weird thing. And then, when you’re comparing yourself to someone who’s at the top of the television iconic world, it’s kind of hard to put yourself there.”

The actor also shared that throughout their time as a couple, they did what they could by “learning and dealing with that” but oftentimes emotions like “pain, and like arguments, or, you know, ego,” creep in.

David Arquette — How David Handled It

David said they were able to find a way around it, “A lot of it has to do with the way you’re taking things, the way you’re saying things, the way you’re responding to things, the way you’re allowing other, sort of, outside influences affect how you feel about yourself.”

He added, “I think building confidence or just focusing on yourself, like working out some of the pain and trauma that I had so that I could open up and own sort of what makes me happy, what my needs are, where my boundaries are.”

He further said, “But we had a really great thing at the end. I just think a lot of people end up when relationships end and lawyers get involved, they really sort of battle a lot of the time and they end up really fighting and spending a lot of money to lawyers where they should be sort of splitting with each other.”

Looking back at how he handled things with the “Cougar Town” actress, David said, “I just encourage people to truly try to work it out.”
