In a revealing interview with Elle on November 14, Moore reflected on the emotional toll these experiences took on her and how she has worked towards self-acceptance.
Early Struggles with Hollywood Pressures
Moore recalled a particularly humiliating experience early in her career when a producer criticized her weight.
“The producer pulled me aside. It was very embarrassing and humiliating,” she said, describing the painful incident.
This moment marked the beginning of a pattern where external pressures heavily influenced her self-worth.
“There is a lot of torment I put myself through when I was younger,” she explained. “The perfect example is when I was told to lose weight multiple times… But that’s just one thing.”
Moore also described how she internalized these demands, leading to extreme behaviors and harsh self-criticism.
“I placed almost all the value of who I was on my body being a certain way — that’s on me,” she acknowledged.
Transforming Her Body For Roles
Over the years, Moore often took on roles that required significant physical transformations, believing they offered a path to self-acceptance.
“I changed my body multiple times through different roles, and I think I chose those roles, whether it was conscious or not, for the very opportunity to find some peace and self-love,” she revealed.
Her memoir, Inside Out, published in 2019, delves into the severity of her exercise addiction, particularly during her preparation for A Few Good Men in 1992.
“I didn’t feel like I could stop exercising,” she wrote. “It was my job to fit into that unforgiving military uniform.”
A Newfound Appreciation For Her Body
Over time, Moore’s perspective shifted, allowing her to embrace and appreciate her body, even in a society that idealizes youth.
“Too often, we’re looking at the better us as somewhere outside of us,” Moore explained. “And the truth is, all of the answers, all of the resources, everything is within us.”
Her daughter, Scout Willis, offered advice that deeply resonated with her.
She says Scout told her that she wanted to “quit wasting time focusing on all that I’m not, when I could be celebrating all that I am,’” Moore shared. “That for me is exactly it. While we’re so focused on what we’re not, we miss out on the beauty of all that we are.”
Moore emphasized that her relationship with her body has become more about gratitude than aesthetics.
“The thing is, I do have love for my body, but it’s more about appreciation — I can really appreciate all that my body does for me now, not just how it looks,” she said. “And the more I appreciate the lines in the corner of my eyes — the more I can find beauty in the life that I’ve lived — the more my life has beauty.”
