Dennis Quaid Joins Cast Of 1883 Spinoff Bass Reeves

Bass Reeves spoilers, news, and updates tease that Dennis Quaid joins the cast of Bass Reeves, which is an upcoming spinoff of 1883. The actor will take on the role of Deputy U.S. Marshal Sherrill Lynn.

The actor will be joining David Oyelowo, who will be playing the title character, who is a legendary lawman of the Wild West. Fans may recognize him from the films, such as The Right Stuff, Innerspace, and Frequency.

“Known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, and also believed to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger, Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded,” as per the description of the upcoming series.

Oyelowo and Quaid are the first cast members of the spinoff to be officially announced. Quaid only had a few TV roles including Merry Happy Whatever, The Art of More, and Vegas. His other film roles include The Rookie and The Day After Tomorrow.

Bass Reeves is the latest addition to Taylor Sheridan’s TV empire and it is set to launch on Paramount+. 1883, Yellowstone’s prequel ended in February last year while 1923 is still airing on the streaming platform.

The upcoming spinoff first made the headlines in September 2021 when Oyelowo signed a deal with MTV Entertainment and Paramount, which was called ViacomCBS back then. It will be executive produced by Yellowstone’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan, Chad Feehan, Oyelowo, David C. Glasser, David Permut, Jessica Oyelowo, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari.

Taylor Sheridan’s Take On Growing TV Empire

In a previous interview with Deadline, Taylor Sheridan said that he doesn’t consider any of the newer series as spinoffs. He considers them “complete stories with common roots.”

“My goal with the next one would be that you could never have seen 1883 or Yellowstone, and still have a fully realized experience as a viewer,” Sheridan said.

Sheridan teased that Bass Reeves will give viewers another peek at the 1883 era. It may not include anyone from the cast of 1883 but he hopes that viewers will still enjoy the series. Bass Reeves isn’t an original character. He lived from 1838 to 1910 and reportedly had more than 3,000 arrests during his lifetime.
