Dennis Quaid Uncertain of ‘Parent Trap’ Revival Without His Late Co-star

Dennis Quaid, who starred in the 1998 film in which he played one of two twins brought together to love each other, has expressed his excitement for a revival of The Parent Trap, the new generation’s answer to the 1961 Disney classic.

He was concerned, though, about how a makeover could and ought to be carried out without his late co-star, the 45-year-old English actress Natasha Richardson, who passed away in 2009 after a skiing accident.

Quaid’s answer to Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet at the premiere of his new film Reagan showed just how large her loss still loomed in his heart. “That would be fantastic,” Quaid said of a Parent Trap revival, “But Natasha—how do we do it without Natasha?”

Moments And People To Appreciate From The ‘Parent Trap’

In the 1998 sibling remake, Quaid and Richardson starred as the parents of two twin sisters, Annie and Hallie, played by Lindsay Lohan. The ‘our parents divorced but we want to get them back together’ plot was the core of the film.

Fans might recall Lisa Ann Walter, who played Chessy and said she’d return for a potential sequel, and Elaine Hendrix, who plays Quaid’s industry-rival fiancée, Meredith Blake.

“She’s really fantastic. She’s grown into a beautiful person,” said Quaid about Lohan. Reflecting on the film’s significance, Quaid described The Parent Trap as a milestone in his career, saying, “‘The Parent Trap’ was like a whole new career for me. It’s such a beautiful movie. I think people will be watching that 100 years from now, I really do.”

Remembering Natasha Richardson

Richardson’s last journey was on a skiing trip at the Mont Tremblant mountain resort in Quebec. She suffered a fall and head injury and refused medical treatment – the injury ultimately leading to her death. She is survived by her husband, the actor Liam Neeson, and her two sons, Micheál and Daniel.

Quaid also reflected on Richardson in 2018 to Us Weekly, calling her death devastating. “She had such a beautiful love, married life with Liam, and two beautiful boys,” Quaid said. She always had a smile on her face when she came to work. That really affected everyone around her.”

The Parent Trap is also special to Lindsay Lohan. “Without this movie, I wouldn’t have gotten the acting bug. How do you not want to only act for the rest of your life after doing a film like this?” she told the director Nancy Meyers and Katie Couric in a 2020 reunion for Variety.

“I just started to cry because I’m like, he doesn’t even know that’s mommy yet,” she told The Drew Barrymore Show. “It was a really magical moment. I took tons of pictures of it.”
