Despite Controversy, Kanye West’s Art Continues to Thrive, Says Collector

Despite Controversy, Kanye West’s Art Continues to Thrive, Says CollectorThe topic of Kanye West, who legally had his name changed to Ye, has been a hot one since the beginning of this month.

Public outrage was first incited when it was announced he would be performing at a UK festival, with fans taking to the internet to complain about it.

However, it was the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer who settled the dispute by banning the rapper from entering the country. At the time, West had already asked for forgiveness and pleaded for the chance to show his reformed mindset.

Despite this, West’s new album made a splash on the Billboard Top 200’s top 10, with the singles from the project ranking comfortably in several global charts. Following the success of his album, an art collector is here to let us know that this success also extends to the artworks he made as a teenager. I’m talking millions, with the 6 Os.

Art Collector Who Invested In Kanye West’s Paintings Shares Collection’s Value

Washington D.C. based entrepreneur and art collector, Vinoda Basnayake, originally purchased several pieces of art West painted in his youth in 2021.

At the time, Basnayake had only seen the paintings on the PBS show Antiques Roadshow when he developed an interest in them. At the time, Antiques Roadshow appraised the pieces around $16,000 to $23,000.

Now, Basnayake is saying that he had the piece re-evaluated and their market value has simply skyrocketed. He revealed that in late 2025, he had the art appraised by the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), bringing the worth of the entire collection to $3.1 million.

As for the reason the value of the art has only gone up, instead of dipping in light of West’s controversial and divisive image, Basnayake said: “They materially missed the bigger picture because they approached the work as typical celebrity art, which on its own doesn’t usually command major value.”

The USPAP’s appraiser view “was that the pieces should instead be contextualized as the opening chapter in the creative journey of Kanye West, someone who went on to become one of the best-selling producers, musical artists, and fashion designers of an entire generation” he said.

The collection features five paintings and drawings that the “Heartless” hitmaker made when he was still studying art at his Polaris School in his hometown of Chicago. Among them is a painting of West’s mother, titled “circa 1995,” said to be worth over $300,000. ‎
