Diane Kruger Talks “Swimming With Sharks,” Her Hot New Role

Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger has been wowing fans in “Swimming With Sharks.”  For many years, Hollywood, like many other sectors, has been a male-driven industry with power hungry male executives who underestimate what females can bring to the table. But in the series “Swimming with Sharks”, the tables have been turned, and the big bad man behind the table is now a woman.

In a recent interview, Kruger opened up about playing her grittiest role yet and what she used as an inspiration for the “bitchy” character she’s portraying onscreen.

Diana Kruger – Says “Swimming With Sharks” Addresses Hard Topics To “Irk Fans”

Kruger is back on our screens with her latest role of a steel-hearted no-nonsense film studio boss, who loves getting her way, no matter how ridiculous her way is.

Speaking on her starring role in “Swimming with Sharks”, she said: “It’s always fun to play — I don’t want to use the word ‘bitchy’ — but that horrible boss we all fear. That felt familiar in terms of having met my fair share of executives or horrible bosses in my life.”

Reminiscent of Meryl Streep’s “The Devil Wears Prada” character, she admitted that to play the character convincingly, she drew from her decades of acting experience. “With age and experience I’ve learnt what I need to understand a character, but I don’t have the luxury of coming home to my daughter and being an arsehole. I don’t want to be that person.”

The six-episode series is based on a 1994 film of the same name, in which Kevin Spacey plays a ruthless studio executive who torments his assistant. Only this time, there’s been a switch, and the lead characters are now females. In 2017, Spacey’s career went downhill when people came forward to call him out for his sexual harassment and predatory behavior while he was the artistic director of the Old Vic theatre. 22-year-old Kiernan Shipka, who rose to fame as a child star on the hit series “Mad Men”, now plays the determined newbie.

“When I first started out there were very few women in these positions of power,” Kruger shared over Zoom from her Manhattan home. “And oftentimes they were incredibly harsh, also towards other women, because they felt like they had the sense of, ‘Oh my God, I have to be double as tough to justify where I’m at.’ I think that’s changed over the years.”

In the series, Kruger’s character, Joyce Holt, has been raped by Redmond, the studio’s executive, who she’s trying to topple years later. In one shocking scene, Redmond (a reptilian Donald Sutherland) commands Joyce to perform a sex act on his young girlfriend in front of him.

Diane Kruger – Says “I’m Not A Victim” As She Opens Up About Surviving Hollywood

The mom-of-one, who welcomed her daughter at the age of 42, confessed that she isn’t playing the character as a way of reconciling with her haunted past, simply because she doesn’t identify as a “victim”.

“This is not me working out old demons or trying to create clickbait for calling people out,” she said firmly. “I’ve certainly come across the Weinsteins of this world. I’ve never been raped. I’m not a victim. I’m here and thriving, but there have been horrible stories exposed.”
