Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke, 98, has reassured fans about his health following recent concerns after he canceled several public engagements. “I feel old,” Van Dyke joked, flashing a smile in a video captured by the New York Post, and added, “I’m praying that I make it” to his 99th birthday this December.

Dyke’s Activity Status

Shortly after Van Dyke canceled his attendance at the FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention, which was scheduled for September 26–28, sparking questions about the Mary Poppins star’s health.

“At almost 99 years of age, traveling and interacting with thousands of people is more than he is able to do at this time,” the event organizers said in a public statement in response to his absence. The actor thanked his followers for their unwavering support even though he wasn’t there.

When Van Dyke failed to show up for the 2024 Emmy Awards on September 15, the day he was scheduled to present, fans became concerned earlier in the month.

Even though he had attended the Creative Arts Emmy Awards with his wife, Arlene Silver, on September 7 and the documentary Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic had won the Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-recorded) award, his absence remained inexplicable.

Dyke Reflects On His Career and Achievements

Van Dyke, reflecting on his incredible career, told reporters after the win, sharing that he hopes he is remembered for “making people laugh for 75 years.” “I don’t know how I did it!” Van Dyke said. “I can’t believe it, that I’m still here and performing,” before quipping, “I’m looking for work if anybody has!”

The legendary entertainer offered some advice to aspiring actors during the event, saying, “You have to stick with it,” he said. “You’re gonna go through hard times and a lot of auditions … but you have to stay with it. Be patient if you’ve got the confidence in yourself, and it’s very important to believe that you can do it.”

Van Dyke’s absence from recent events is not entirely out of character for someone nearing 99, though it is a reminder of his remarkable resilience. Just months prior, in June, Van Dyke made history as the oldest Daytime Emmy Award winner for his guest role on Days of Our Lives, portraying Timothy Robicheaux.

Reflecting on this achievement, he told PEOPLE, “This nomination is very exciting; after all, it took me 75 years and my pal Drake Hogestyn to get on a soap opera! He is really the reason this happened and deserves the credit and thanks.”

More On Dyke’s Legacy

Van Dyke, who is often celebrated for his comedic and musical roles, acknowledged the uniqueness of the recognition, stating, “This is a very different honor for me; I seldom get recognized for dramatic or straight acting – comedy and musicals are my specialty after all,” Van Dyke’s statement continued. “I’m so honored and it will be a fun night celebrating with the entire daytime television community.”

While the star may be slowing down, he remains an inspiration to both fans and fellow actors, continuing to bring joy and wisdom, even as he nears his milestone 99th birthday.
