Dionne Warwick Remembers the First Time She Met Elvis Presley

Dionne Warwick has seen firsthand the glorious effect of one Elvis Presley. She first met the “Falling in Love With You” singer in Las Vegas, and it’s a moment that’s stored itself safely away in her most treasured memories.

To us, it seems that Warwick has been around forever, but to the 83-year-old, there was a time she was the new kid on the block.

In an interview with CBS News, the singer and actress, who was named one of Kennedy Center honorees this year, talked about her first impression when she met Elvis Presley in Las Vegas.

This happened, on her accounts, when Cissy Houston, her aunt and the mother of Whitney Houston, was part of his backing group, the Sweet Inspirations.

“Oh my God, was he pretty!” Warwick recalled, adding: “He said, ‘I’m gonna make an announcement tonight at my show that anyone who goes into a record store and they [buy] any Dionne Warwick album, they will find a photograph signed by me.”

As a result of this unforeseen act of kindness, Warwick recalled selling “more albums in Vegas than I have ever sold.”

Another of her precious “firsts” moments was when she received her very first standing ovation. This happened when she was six years and her minister grandfather called her up to the pulpit to sing. “After I finished singing, the whole congregation stood and applauded me,” she told the publication. “That was my first standing ovation.”

It’s not hard to see that Warwick was in born into a family that both enjoyed music and made a success of it.

Her cousin Whitney Houston remains to this day one of the greatest musicians of all time, and Warwick herself has maintained an enduring career for over six decades.

“It was almost like it was preordained, that if you’re in this family, this is what you’re gonna do,” she said of being born into a musical family – her mother and siblings performed as the Drinkard Sisters.
