Dolly Parton is still being the funny queen she’s always been, even in a recent interview with PEOPLE. Once upon a time, the singer and actress admitted that she’s as ageless as a cartoon.
Now, she’s joked about how aware she is whenever she’s not wearing makeup. Long may Dolly Parton reign!
Dolly Parton – On Writing A Book About Her Memorable Fashion Moments
Dolly Parton’s career has spanned decades, and during all that time, she has rocked some pretty interesting pieces that deserve to be revisited.
And that is exactly what she’s done in the new book, “Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones” – out Oct. 17 via Ten Speed Pictures.
In the book, the country icon details her glorious world of fashion, hairstyles and makeup. To Parton, the book is more of her life’s museum than anything else.
“The older I get, the more I think, ‘Well, people really want to know about how you become who you are once you kind of reach a certain status,'” the “Jolene” hitmaker, 77, told PEOPLE of the book, written with Holly George-Warren and curated by Parton’s niece, Rebecca Seaver. “So, I thought, ‘Why don’t I do [a book] about my clothes, my fashion, my hair and all the looks that I’ve had — good, bad and indifferent?'”
During her younger years, having come from a poorer background, Parton didn’t have the means to get quality beauty products.
“I’d find ways to create my own makeup with pokeberries and stuff that grew wild in the fields. I think all people that grow up in the mountains learn how to improvise with what you don’t have,” she said. “I would strike Mama’s old kitchen matches to make eyebrows and my beauty mark. Still, I find myself mixing and matching different makeups for different colors.”
Despite not having access to professional makeups, it didn’t stop her from making use of her thriftiness to glam herself up when she started singing on radio and television programs as a kid.
Before making enough money to shop for outfits, she’d always rock homemade clothes.
However, Parton hasn’t missed buying a “great line of makeup” since her career took off in the ’60s. This doesn’t mean that she’s totally neglected the inexpensive ones.
“Maybelline was always a biggie, especially with eye makeup. I didn’t have to burn the matches anymore,” she jokingly said, before going on to name Oil of Olay, Pond’s Cold Cream and Max Factor’s True Beige shade as accessible products that “don’t cost a fortune.”
Dolly Parton – Reveals the Only Time Fans Can Get To See Her Without Makeup
When Parton gives you a makeup advise, you better take it. Because her decades-long experiences and her deep deep love for makeup has turned her into an absolute expert.
When asked what would make her to leave the house without wearing makeup, she comically responded, “Death!”
“You’d just have to see me laid out on a stretcher,” Parton joked, before offering up a more serious scenario: “No, if my husband [Carl Thomas Dean] was sick, or if there was an emergency, of course, I would [leave the house without makeup].”
She continued: “If I got arrested for a bad tag or whatever, I don’t want a mugshot looking like some of the stars I’ve seen,” she says. “I’m going to clean up a little if I’m going outside, unless there’s an absolute emergency, and it would have to be pretty serious. I would do it then, but that would be the only way.”
