Dolly Parton may not be a Nashville native, but she’s spent several decades of her life there. As a result of this, the country icon would want nothing more than to have her musical show – you know, the very one she’s dreamed about all her life – arrive at Nashville.
The show will run for four weeks beginning July 18 at Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.
Dolly Parton’s Musical Will Have Its World Premiere In Nashville
The Dolly Parton Musical will introduce us “to an icon with a heart as big as her dreams.”
Before moving to Broadway in New York City, the stage production, which is based on the life of the country music icon and philanthropist, will have a four-week limited run in the Tennessee capital city. It will kick off on July 18 with a preview performance and end its run on Aug. 17
Per the press release, “DOLLY: An Original Musical takes us on a journey through the life of this rhinestone in the rough, from her barefoot beginnings in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee to performing in platform heels under the bright lights of Hollywood.
Featuring all her beloved hits, including “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5,” and new songs written by Dolly, this joyful and moving new musical will take you inside the literal rags-to-riches story of Dolly Parton and give you new insight into her triumphs, trials, and trailblazing. Directed by Tony Award® winner Bartlett Sher with a book by Dolly Parton and Maria S. Schlatter, DOLLY: An Original Musical is as endearing and inspiring as the global superstar herself.”
Speaking on the joy of finally seeing her dream Broadway show come to past, Parton gushed, “I’ve lived my whole life to see this show on stage. I’ve written many original songs for the show and included all your favorites in it as well. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll clap, you’ll stomp, it truly is a Grand Ol’ Opera. Pun and fun intended.”
She also stressed the importance of bringing Nashville’s unique sounds to New York, telling Variety, “I think they’ll appreciate me taking Nashville to New York with all those country sounds.
And when I had a chance to do something bigger and broader where I thought, ‘Oh, I’m gonna get to have an orchestra — that’s gonna be great if I can have strings on this and that.’ It was exciting and fun for me to write the new stuff.”
