Dr. Dre — About MGT’s Unauthorized Use Of Dre’s Music

This incident took place on Monday, Jan 9th, when MGT uploaded a video on Twitter which featured her walking down the halls of the Capitol building, on a call with who could be guessed to be the former president of the United States, Donald Trump.

MGT made sure the number of votes declaring fellow rep Kevin McCarthy as the winner for House Speaker could be seen. The video had Dr. Dre’s “Still D.R.E” song playing in the background. MGT captioned the tweet, “it’s time to begin.. and they can’t stop what’s coming.”

Not long after the tweet, Dr. Dre made his displeasure with MGT using his song for her video known. In a statement sent to TMZ, the ” Next Episode” rapper said, “I don’t license my music to politicians, especially someone as divisive and hateful as this one.”

For that reason, MGT was temporarily locked out of her Twitter account, and the video in question, deleted. She had to send a screenshot of Dre’s statement to TMZ in a different post later that same Monday. She made the post with the caption “the next episode” which is a title of one of Dre’s songs.

Dr. Dre — What The Letter Served To MGT States

One of Dre’s attorneys Howard King wrote in the Cease-and-Desist letter, which addressed MGT as a lawbreaker, “One might expect that, as a member of Congress, you would have a passing familiarity with the laws of our country.”

“It’s possible, though, that laws governing intellectual property are a little too arcane and insufficiently populist for you to really have spent much time on. We’re writing because we think an actual lawmaker should be making laws not breaking laws.”

After her account was reinstated, MGT took to her Twitter to tweet, “While I appreciate the creative chord progression, I would never play your words of violence against women and police officers, and your glorification of the thug life and drugs.”
