Drew Barrymore, an A-list actress and talkshow host, has been won over by the writers’ movement and she has joined in campaigning for more base pay for writers in Hollywood.

In light of the movement, Barrymore decided to step back from her hosting duties at the MTV Awards Show this year, even though she’ll be watching at home.

“I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” Barrymore wrote in a statement shared with Variety. “Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation.”

This does not mean that she’s done hosting the awards show, as she later shared on Instagram that she will be returning to host the show next year.

MTV Awards Show – To Go On Without A Host Following Drew Barrymore’s Withdrawal

Following Barrymore’s announcement, Bruce Gillmer, a president at Paramount Global and an executive producer of the MTV Movie & TV Awards, revealed that the show will go on without a host.

Predictably, Barrymore’s withdrawal could lead to some other stars dropping out, but there is reason to believe that Jennifer Coolidge will make it as she will be honored at this year’s ceremony.

On Tuesday, thousands of writers went on strike to protest for more pay, arguing that they’ve helped to build the industry while their pay remains the same. Some of the most immediate effects of the strike was seen on talk shows and sketch shows, but its effects will be felt by movies and TV shows, with many set to witness delays in production.
