The Dwayne Johnson/Vin Diesel drama over the former returning for the tenth and final installment in the epic “Fast and the Furious” franchise was one for the books. Now, there’s talks that Johnson made a cameo appearance in “Fast X” and fans are left wondering, when did the waters smooth over.
Here’s the lowdown of the drama as they publicly left it.
Dwayne Johnson Reportedly Makes “Surprise” Cameo In “Fast X”
According to The Wrap, “Fast X“ features a Dwayne Johnson cameo at the end, despite Johnson previously making it clear that he was done with the franchise for good. That was two years ago.
The movie will be arriving in theaters this Friday, May 19. After Dwayne Johnson’s “Black Adam” “flopped,” fans mocked him, saying that he has no choice but to return to Diesel’s widely popular “Fast and the Furious” franchise. Turns out they were right?
Johnson, 51, joined the hit franchise as Hobbs in 2011’s “Fast Five” and was last seen playing the character in the 2019 spinoff starring Jason Statham, titled, “Hobbs and Shaw.”
At the time, Johnson revealed that he made it ultra-clear to the production company that he would only be returning if he doesn’t have to share scenes with Diesel. He said that it was a necessary precaution to avoid unnecessary “drama.”
In “Hobbs and Shaw,” Johnson and Statham played the titular characters, which has a cast that includes big names like Vin Diesel, Jason Momoa, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, John Cena, Rita Moreno, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Charlize Theron, Nathalie Emmanuel and more. The late Paul Walker’s daughter is set to make a cameo in its sequel.
Dwayne Johnson – Calls Vin Diesel Out For Manipulation Over His Refusal To Return For “Fast X”
As the time to start shooting what would become “Fast and the Furious’” tenth installment “Fast X” rolled in, Vin Diesel made a public plea to Johnson to help him land the franchise in high waters by returning as Hobbs.
He wrote in the November 2021 post: “As you know, my children refer to you as Uncle Dwayne in my house. There is not a holiday that goes by that they and you don’t send well wishes… but the time has come. Legacy awaits.”
“I told you years ago that I was going to fulfill my promise to Pablo,” he continued, referencing Walker, who died in November 2013. “I swore that we would reach and manifest the best Fast in the finale that is 10! I say this out of love… but you must show up, do not leave the franchise idle you have a very important role to play. Hobbs can’t be played by no other. I hope that you rise to the occasion and fulfill your destiny.”
However lovely the post may seem to you, the “Scorpion King” star called it an “example of Diesel’s manipulation.”
“This past June, when Vin and I actually connected not over social media, I told him directly — and privately — that I would not be returning to the franchise,” Johnson told CNN in December 2021. “I was firm yet cordial with my words and said that I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful, but that there was no chance I would return.”
