Elizabeth Olsen — About Elizabeth Olsen’s Panic Attacks

Speaking with Variety in a recent interview, the star of WandaVision revealed how she began having series of mental health issues which came in the form of panic attacks when she turned 21 and relocated to New York. According to the actress, 33, before she turned 21, she never had nor experienced what it was like t9 have panic attacks so when began experiencing it, she was always at a loss for what to do to stop it, she sometimes feel like she was going to die.

She recalled having the attacks every hour of every hour, and not being able to cross the streets to get to her street, “I remember I would get [panic attacks] on the hour every hour, I used to live on 13th Street between 6th and 7th. I was crossing 6th Avenue at 14th Street, and I realized I couldn’t cross the street — I stood up against the wall, and I just thought I was going to drop dead at any moment.”

The actress explained that any form of shift in her body, for example, feeling hot and suddenly her body switches to feeling cold, or feeling hungry but suddenly began to feel full, when shifts like that happens to her body, Elizabeth says she would think something is wrong with her and without thinking twice she would begin to panic, and she would begin spinning and spiraling. The actress went on to say that an ENT doctor told her that “it could be vertigo-related because it was all about truly spinning. So it was an interesting six months.”

Elizabeth Olsen — How Elisabeth Was Able To Keep Her Health Issues At Bay

According to the actress, her anxiety went on for months until she brought the matter to a friend of hers who has had panic attacks before her, who also has a doctor that helped her friend get through it, only then was she able to control her anxiety and keep them at bay. Elizabeth said her friend’s doctor taught her a “brain game” which, Elizabeth likened to the acting exercises she receives.

“It actually was very similar to an acting exercise that we did at Atlantic, which is called repetition, where you just are constantly making observations about the person in front of you and you’re just trying to connect. When I would walk down the street, I would just start naming everything I saw out loud to get myself out of the spiraling thoughts in my brain.”

Just as the saying “practice makes perfect” goes, Elisabeth perfected the act and it helped keep her thoughts from spinning in her brain, she noted that although she didn’t need medication, she always kept it with her in case of an emergency, and having in mind that she has her medication in her bag helps her feel safe.
