When Maroon 5 sang that fame isn’t as awesome as we imagine it to be, they weren’t joking. It’s especially hard for child actors, who were exposed to an insane level of fame that people thought it was okay to say whatever to and about them despite their age. For Fanning, the reality was all too real.
Elle Fanning – Remembers Someone Calling Her “Unf*ckable” At Age 16
In a roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter featuring other stars like “Wednesday’s” Jenna Ortega, “Abbot Elementary’s” Sheryl Lee Ralph, “The Bear’s” Ayo Edebiri, Fanning opened up about something she’s never talked about to emphasize the reason her awesome team protects her from certain elements of fame.
She said: “I’ve never told this story, but I was trying out for a movie. I didn’t get it. I don’t even think they ever made it, but it was a father-daughter road trip comedy.
I didn’t hear from my agents because they wouldn’t tell me things like this — that filtration system is really important because there’s probably a lot more damaging comments that they filtered — but this one got to me. I was 16 years old, and a person said, “Oh, she didn’t get the father-daughter road trip comedy because she’s unf*ckable.”
This prompted a shocked Ralph To Exclaim, “Whoa, At 16?”
Fanning casually brushed it off by replying, “Yeah, it’s so disgusting. And I can laugh at it now, like, “What a disgusting pig!”
Luckily, our Fanning is not someone that could easily be kicked into a corner, as she revealed that her confidence saw her through every demeaning word. “I was always immensely confident, but of course you’re growing up in the public eye, and it’s weird. I’ll look at paparazzi photos from when I was 12 and think, “Is that a good thing to see such a mirror of yourself at that age?” I don’t feel like it damaged me, but it definitely made me very aware of myself,” she shared.
