King’s Reflects On Comments About Estranged Relationship with Father
Reflecting on the attention her comments received, King told People, “I never in a million years thought that that was going to go viral. I was just speaking about my childhood and about my truth. I was not trying to hurt him.” Earlier, during an appearance on the “Dumb Blonde” podcast hosted by Bunnie XO, she revealed that there were periods of four to five years when she didn’t speak to her father.
USA TODAY reached out to King’s representatives for further comment. A spokesperson for Schneider, however, declined to provide a statement.
In her interview with Bunnie XO, King recalled feeling forgotten by Schneider throughout her childhood, mentioning that he missed many birthdays, including her 18th, which she spent in summer school. “They brought me cupcakes, and I came home, and my dad forgot my birthday,” she shared.
She also criticized her father for sending her to “fat camp” as a child, revealing that she injured herself and didn’t lose any weight, which led to further complications. Beyond their personal disputes, King expressed strong disagreement with many of her father’s public views, particularly his comments regarding drag performers and LGBTQ+ rights.
Schneider had sparked controversy with remarks about drag queens appearing at the Olympics, which King openly opposed.
King Discusses Father’s Apology
King also spoke out about an apology Schneider issued during a segment on Tucker Carlson’s show, describing it as disingenuous. She told People, “A lot of people said, ‘How could she say that about her family?’ and ‘Everything needs to be behind closed doors.’ No, it doesn’t. Sometimes you have to just say things and get them off your chest so that you don’t carry it for the rest of your life.”
Reflecting on the situation, King expressed no regrets about her public statements, saying, “The best thing that came from that is that my incredible LGBTQ+ community knows they have an ally in me.” She emphasized that her primary concern was being a supportive ally and noted that she would have spoken out “10 more times” if necessary to ensure her stance was clear.
This year has been challenging for the “High Road” singer. King recently faced backlash after delivering an intoxicated performance during a Dolly Parton tribute at the Grand Ole Opry.
She later discussed the incident on the “Off the Vine” podcast, explaining that she attended a “therapeutic program” afterward to address personal struggles that were not apparent to the public.
