Emily In Paris Star Lily Collins Was Once In A Very Toxic Relationship That Almost Killed Her Self Esteem

No matter how gorgeous and talented you are, the wrong partner can make you want to crawl into a hole just to feel safe.

Collins appeared on Wednesday’s episode of “We Can Do Hard Things” podcast and sincerely opened up about a “toxic” relationship from her past that stripped her of her confidence and left her feeling like she’s not enough.

Lily Collins – Recalls Enduring Abuse From Her Ex During Her Early Twenties

“For me, my romantic toxic relationship was verbal and emotional abuse and being made to feel very small,” she told co-hosts Glennon Doyle, Amanda Doyle, and Abby Wambach of an ex-boyfriend she had in her early 20s. The actress, 33, continued, “

He would call me ‘Little Lily.’ You should be ‘Little Lily’ and he’d use awful words about me in terms of what I was wearing and would call me a whore and all these things.”

She then detailed how her ex’s “belittling words” made her become “quite silent and comfortable in silence and feeling like I had to make myself small to feel super safe.” The relationship forced Collins – who was previously outspoken about overcoming eating disorders – to therapy in order to redeem her confidence once more.

When Prey Felt Threatened, They Made Themselves As Small As Possible

“When prey felt threatened, they made themselves as small as possible,” she shared. “Possibly by not eating by making themselves look as least juicy and enticing as possible and that’s where they felt the safest.” The worst of all was that her ex’s abusive nature caused her to have “panic” and “anxiety” attacks.

In fact, the “Emily in Paris” actress shared that she is still triggered by it to this day despite enjoying a healthy and happy relationship with husband Charlie McDowell.
