As per reports, rapper Eminem’s mom, Debbie Nelson has died at the age of 69. According to TMZ, sources have stated that Nelson passed away due to lung cancer this past Monday, December 2 in St. Joseph, Missouri. It’s important to note that Eminem hasn’t publicly confirmed the TMZ report.
Eminem’s Mom, Debbie Nelson Was Fighting Lung Cancer
The report on Nelson’s passing comes approximately three months after In Touch Weekly broke the story that she had advanced lung cancer and was terminally ill.
At that point in time, the report revealed there weren’t “many options” for Nelson, and she was “staying between the cancer center and with family members. She has a very limited amount of time [left].”
With that said, the report also revealed that Eminem had been financially supporting his mom for years, although he had reported not visited her during her cancer battle.
The report was not clear if the rapper was aware of his mom’s health condition. He has also never commented on it, publicly.
The source in the report stated, “People around her aren’t even sure if Eminem is even aware of what is happening to his mother. He’s good to his mom. He makes sure he takes care of her, but they don’t really talk. It would be good for both of them [to communicate]. This could give them the chance to reconcile.”
Debbie Nelson’s Legacy
As per People, Debbie was the oldest of five children. She welcomed Marshall Bruce Mathers III (Eminem’s real name) on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph. The two had a tumultuous relationship that the rapper often referred to in some of his hit songs.
As such, in the early 2000s, she sued him for defamation and received a $25,000 settlement. Reports have noted she only received $1,600 after legal fees were paid.
Despite this, the two did seem to smooth things over as the years went on. In 2013, he released “Headlights,” which was a song that many thought was a public apology to Nelson. In addition to Eminem, Nelson had another son, Nathan Samra-Mathers.
She is also survived by six grandchildren, Eminem’s three kids he shares with ex-wife, Kim Scott: Hailie Jade Scott, Alaina Scott, and Stevie Laine Scott. In addition, Nathan and his wife share a daughter and two sons.
