Eric Roberts Expresses Regret Over Past Feud With Sister, Julia Roberts, In New Memoir

Eric Roberts has publicly apologized to his sister, Julia Roberts, in his new memoir, Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far.

The 68-year-old actor, known for his roles in films like The Dark Knight, has retracted his previous statements suggesting he was instrumental in Julia’s rise to fame.

In his memoir, Eric reflects on his past claims made in a 2018 Vanity Fair interview, where he asserted, “If it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts and no Emma Roberts as celebrities, as actresses, and I’m very proud of that.”

He now acknowledges these remarks as “asinine” and hopes Julia will accept his public apology. “I hope Julia will accept this public apology. It was an asinine thing to have said,” Eric writes in his book.

Eric, who was nominated for an Oscar for Runaway Train in 1985, contrasts his early successes with Julia’s later achievements. Julia received Oscar nominations for Steel Magnolias in 1990 and Pretty Woman in 1991, eventually winning the Best Actress Award for Erin Brockovich in 2001.

Eric’s book explores his troubled past, including his drug addiction, which he admits negatively impacted his relationships with Julia and their sister, Lisa.

Eric expresses regret for his actions, stating, “I wouldn’t be surprised if they suffered from PTSD from when it was dangerous to be around me.” He also discusses the personal consequences of his addiction, notably losing custody of his daughter, Emma Roberts, with his former partner Kim Cunningham.

Despite these challenges, Eric remains hopeful for the future, wishing to move forward with dignity and grace. “I imagine I will remain as Julia’s brother and Emma Roberts’ dad for the rest of my life,” he writes, “I’d like to make good on that, to move aside proudly and with grace. That’s part of the reason for writing the book.”
