Freddie Prinze Jr. has candidly shared insights into his enduring marriage with Sarah Michelle Gellar, revealing the keys to their relationship’s longevity.
The couple first met on the set of the 1997 film “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and tied the knot in 2002. Reflecting on their two-decade-long marriage, Freddie highlighted essential elements that have contributed to their success.
In 2022, during an appearance on “The Kyle and Jackie O Show,” the 47-year-old actor discussed his marriage, expressing initial hesitations about offering relationship advice. He then shared a unique perspective on why their union has been so successful.
Freddie humorously noted the significance of his culinary skills, saying, “The reason why I think Sarah and I work is because my mom was a chef and I learned how to cook, and I married someone who couldn’t cook. So I’m necessary. She needs me to live and sustain herself.” This lighthearted comment underscores the role of mutual dependence and support in their marriage.
Freddie’s Emphasize of The Importance of Laughter and Friendship
Additionally, Freddie emphasized the importance of laughter in their relationship. Although they met in 1997, their romantic journey began three years later. In a 2020 interview with US Weekly, Freddie recounted how their friendship blossomed before they started dating.
Initially, he only wanted to be friends with Sarah, believing she was too skinny and wanting to cook for her—a gesture rooted in his family’s traditions.
Freddie explained, “By the end of the movie, I just wanted to be friends with her because I thought she was too skinny and I wanted to cook for her. Because that’s what my family does.
And so, we started this weekly barbecue thing at her house, and me and my cousins would come over and cook food for her and her friends. And then we’d make sure everybody ate, and that was kind of how our friendship began.”
A First Date By Chance To Building A Family
Their first date in 2000 happened by chance, as Freddie shared with PEOPLE in 2020, “We were friends for a very long time.
We’d had many dinners before. And we were supposed to go with someone else, and the third person didn’t make it out and we decided to still go. We were just two people at dinner catching up. We had a long car ride and a long dinner and things just happened.”
After getting engaged in 2001, Freddie and Sarah married in Mexico the following year. The Scooby-Doo stars began their family seven years later, welcoming their daughter Charlotte in 2009 and their son Rocky in 2012.
