Gavin Newsom Sets Deadline For Menendez Brothers Parole Decision

Gavin Newsom Sets Deadline For Menendez Brothers Parole DecisionThere’s an update in the ongoing Menendez Brothers parole saga. California Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced that he’s set a date for their parole hearing, and CTS has all the details.

Menendez Brothers Parole Hearing Date Set

All eyes will be on their screens come Friday, June 13 as this is the date slated for Lyle and Erik Menendez’s parole hearing.

As per a report from TMZ, Governor Newsom announced the date during his podcast, explaining that the parole board will do a risk assessment before sending its findings to his office for a final decision on whether the brothers should be released. The two have spent over three decades in prison.

In addition, Lyle and Erik are looking at an alternative legal approach, as the report will be sent to a judge for a potential resentencing, which may also lead to “time served” and an early release.

Menendez Brothers – New Lease On Life

The Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, as well as another documentary, were key in helping shift the perception of the brothers in the public eye.

In addition, the state has passed legal reform that could work to Lyle and Erik’s advantage. One pivotal change is how courts review abuse claims within violent crime cases, which allows a deeper look into defendants that argue ‘self-defense’ due to trauma.

If the judge believes that the evidence of abuse should’ve been looked at more during the brothers’ original trials, then there is a possibility for reduced sentencing – even early release.

Plus, California has extended parole eligibility for convicted young adults, acknowledging that brain development continues well into an individual’s 20s. Lyle was 21 and Erik was 18, which could be a key factor looked at when the parole board and judge review their case.

Despite prosecutors maintaining the murders of the brothers’ parents were premeditated, and not because of abuse, many of Lyly and Erik’s extended family members support their release.
