Who knew Mr. and Mrs. Smith “could have gone a whole different way”? Apart from the drama outside of the movie – as we already know, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt divorced during the release of the movie – Gwen Stefani recently shared that she almost went for the role. Could Gwen Stefani starring as Mrs. Smith in the iconic spy thriller change the course of history? Guess we’ll never know.

Stefani revealed that she auditioned for the role of Jane to Brad Pitt’s John in 2005 action-romance film.

The movie saw Jolie’s Jane and Brad Pitt’s John get hitched within hours of meeting each other, only to find out they’re both international spies who work on opposing sides and then try to take each other out. As you might have guessed, love conquers all, and just when they’re about to kill each other – after numerous failed attempts – they really and truly fall in love with each other.

The movie received widespread critical acclaim and is currently one of Jolie’s most grossing works.

But who could have guessed that singer-songwriter Gwen Stefani, who no doubt has a couple of impressive movies under her belt, was also gunning for the role at the time.

On Thursday, Stefani appeared on The Ellen Show as a guest star. During the show’s popular Burning Questions segment, host Ellen DeGeneres asked Stefani: “What movie role have you auditioned for that people would be surprised to know?”

The star responded: “Mr and Mrs. Smith: Angelina beat me,” which drew gasps from the studio audience. “That could have gone a whole different way,” Degeneres remarked. “Talk about sliding doors.”

The movie, which has already brought in $487m at the worldwide box office, was sensationally scrutinized when rumors of an affair between Pitt and Jolie began to circulate while the former was still married to Jennifer Aniston.

After Pitt and Aniston divorced the same year as the movie’s release, Jolie went on to confirm that she and Pitt formed a romantic connection whilst filming on set.

In a 2006 interview with Vogue, Jolie admitted: “We just became kind of a pair. And it took until, really, the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realise that it might mean something more than we’d earlier allowed ourselves to believe.”

The pair share 6 children together and filed for divorce in 2016.
