During their tenure as judges on The Voice, Gwen Stefani and Kelly Clarkson developed a close relationship while competing against one another. Stefani recently considered her connection with Clarkson and disclosed an unexpected emotion: jealousy, despite the fact that neither will be in the next season of the program.
Clarkson’s close friendship with her husband, Blake Shelton, and their on-screen chemistry were not the source of Gwen Stefani’s envy. Rather, it resulted from Clarkson’s unwavering inventiveness and hard ethic.
In an interview with The Today Show, Stefani expressed her amazement at Clarkson’s ability to balance her profession and family life, particularly during the difficult period of the pandemic.
Why Gwen Stefani Was Jealous of Kelly Clarkson
Stefani admitted that Clarkson’s commitment to writing music while managing motherhood and other responsibilities took her by surprise.
Despite balancing her own family life, Stefani felt overwhelmed by how Clarkson was able to find time to work on her music, especially since she was also raising her children.
Stefani expressed this feeling during an interview with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on Today, admitting her jealousy after receiving texts from Clarkson, who was sharing the songs she was writing. Stefani said:
“Kelly Clarkson kept texting me all these songs she’s writing, and I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, you have babies! When are you writing?’ I stay up all night. I’m like, ‘Wait, what? I’m making bread and doing homeschool, I don’t know when I…’ And I sort of got jealous! And they [her songs] were good, and I was like ‘I want to write some songs.’”
While Stefani was unaware of the personal challenges Clarkson was going through at the time — including a tough divorce — it became clear that this pain fueled Clarkson’s creativity. Stefani’s jealousy, however, sparked her own desire to get back into songwriting.
Gwen Stefani’s Career Revival Through Jealousy
Stefani, inspired by Clarkson’s determination and productivity, realized she needed to focus on her own creative passions, which had taken a backseat for years.
She acknowledged that while being a wife and mother were essential parts of her life, her music was her true outlet and that writing songs was how she felt she could contribute to the world.
This inspiration led Stefani to release her fifth solo album, Bouquet, in November 2024. The album, her first in seven years, debuted at 95th on the U.S. Billboard 200.
Despite mixed success with its singles, Stefani’s return to music marked a significant career revival, with Clarkson’s work ethic serving as the catalyst.
While neither Stefani nor Clarkson will return as coaches for the upcoming season of The Voice, their impact on each other’s lives and careers continues to resonate.
