In a new interview, Gwen Stefani talked about their recent project. She admitted the song was about “being insecure” in a relationship.
Some fans think it’s a clue the couple suffered marital problems. Gwen shared a new video revealing the writing process behind “Purple Irises.”
In the clip, Gwen and Blake hung out in the recording studio. They talked about what lyrics to add to the song. They also recorded their respective lyrics.
Gwen talked about the creative process. She admitted that the love song is about a relationship is filled with insecurities.
“I was on my way to a session and hit me,” Gwen Stefani explained. “It was like Purple Irises. That’s the song. And I actually wrote it, put it in my phone, and drove into the driveway, and went in and started writing this song about being insecure.”
Gwen explained that the song was based on her insecurity with her age. The 54-year-old feared the idea of someone else ruining their relationship. The No Doubt frontwoman shared that she often felt insecure.
“I knew the day I wrote Purple Irises I needed to be truthful to myself and write this song about, I’m getting older, I don’t feel pretty,” Gwen Stefani continued. “If I don’t feel pretty, how could someone else think I’m pretty still? What if somebody tries to take my love away from me?”

In the comment section of the Instagram post, fans praised Gwen for being so raw and candid with her fans. They loved that she showed this vulnerable side to herself. She admitted she “wanted to show how insecure I could feel.”

Gwen Stefani played the song for Blake. She asked him if he could join her in on the project. Even though the two sing different musical styles, she said the idea “made sense in her brain.” She always wanted to work on a different song with her husband, which she calls a “dream fantasy world.”
