Hayden Panettiere Discusses Relinquishing Daughter’s Custody

The star of Scream 6 Hayden Panettiere appeared in the Sept. 28 episode of Red Table Talk hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, Adrienne Banfield Norris, and guest host Kelly Osbourne to discuss how things really were with her when she handed her then 4-year-old daughter Kaya over to her ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. Hayden first set the record straight about the opinions people formed on the whole situation with her daughter.

The actress expressed her pain over the opinions being formed and how people were working with the narrative. While speaking with the hosts, Hayden revealed that people think she gave up her daughter and those comments hurt her because it wasn’t in any way the truth. It was misrepresented, and according to her, that was the reason she found it really difficult to open up about what really happened.

Hayden Panettiere Opens Up About How She Signed The Full Custody Papers

Hayden said that there was a time she saw a false headline that said, “Why Hayden chose to give up her daughter,” and according to her those assumptions and lies flying around about how things were between her and her daughter – with people saying she gave up on her daughter and all the rumors made her life very “tough.” She chose not to address it then because she doesn’t want to piss anyone off “especially the person who has control of the child.”

Hayden Panettiere then went on to explain that there was no discussion whatsoever between her and her ex-fiance Wladimir Klitschko about Hayden sending her daughter Kaya over to Wladimir to be with her father for the period of time Hayden would be gone to receive treatment for her postpartum depression and alcohol and drug addiction. According to Hayden, if there had been any form of discussion like that with her ex, she would understand and agree to it.

“If he’d come to me and said, ‘I think because of where you’re at right now and your struggles that you’re having it would be good for her to be over here with me for a while,’ to which if I had probably had enough of a conversation, I would’ve said, ‘Okay. that makes sense,’ I get it. I’ll come there to visit and stuff like that.” Hayden also said that signing the papers of full custodian of Kaya over to her father wasn’t an easy thing for her at all in fact, in her exact words “I mean, it was the worst signing those papers, the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever, ever had to do in my life.”

Hayden Panettiere — Hayden’s Initial Plan About Her Daughter

Hayden began battling with alcohol and opioid addiction during the earlier stages of her acting career, the eight-month stint in rehab helped the actress break out of what she described as a “cycle of self-destruction.” According to Hayden her plans before she signed over the custody papers to Wladimir was to have Kaya stay with her dad during the period she’ll be at rehab so that when she returns she would let her daughter come over to see her. “Was gonna go work on myself, I was gonna get better and when I got better then things could change and she could come to me, and I could have my time with her but that didn’t happen.”
