The movie was created by Euphoria visionary Sam Levinson, acclaimed musician Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, and the singer’s producing partner Reza Fahim, the upcoming music-industry drama is set to follow a rising pop star (Lily-Rose Depp) who falls into a relationship with a self-help guru (The Weeknd). She soon learns the self-help guru has a much darker role in the industry.
The teaser for The Idol was first shown on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at MetLife Stadium during Tesfaye’s After Hours til Dawn Tour.
HBO’s ‘The Idol’ — About The Teaser Trailer
HBO dropped the teaser trailer for The Weeknd and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson’s latest series and the opening sequence reads “From The Sick & Twisted Minds of the Creator of Euphoria Sam Levinton and Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye” before it cuts to over a minute of footage from the series.
Teased as “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood,” The Idol will see Depp’s character descend deeper into the self-help guru’s orbit — and the cult he leads.
The first look mainly focuses on shots of Hollywood parties, endless trays of cocaine, bongs, and seduction. Depp’s leading character is seen filming a music video before she later ends up on a mansion balcony, staring down at guards with guns below.
When things slow down for a dinner party, The Weeknd asks Depp: “Why don’t you just be yourself?”
“Because there is nothing about me that’s relatable,” she responds.
HBO’s ‘The Idol’ — The Weekend’s Part In The Making Of The Movie
The first time we heard about ‘The Idol’ was on June 29, 2021, that was around when Abel “the Weeknd” Tesfaye announced that he would be creating, executive producing, and co-writing a drama series for HBO alongside Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson. That same day, it was announced that Ashley Levinson and Joseph Epstein would be the executive producers of the series, with Epstein also serving as a writer and the series’ showrunner.
Mary Laws was also announced as a writer and will serve as a co-executive producer, alongside Tesfaye’s co-manager Wassim Slaiby and his creative director La Mar Taylor. HBO gave the production a series order for a first season consisting of six episodes on November 22, 2021.
Early this year, Deadline Hollywood reported that Nick Hall joined the production as an executive producer, following his move to A24 to oversee creative for the company’s television slate. Three months ago, Variety reported that Seimetz had left the project, citing sources who stated that multiple episodes had already been filmed but that these would be reshot by Sam Levinson assuming her role as the series’ director as the series changes its creative direction.
