Idris Elba Debunks James Bond Casting Rumors

Since it was announced that “No Time To Die” would be Daniel Craig’s last bow as James Bond, rumors have been swirling all over the internet as fans tried to guess who will play the next 007. The name consistently at the top of every list and every speculation is Idris Elba. However true fans want this to be, the truth of the matter is that Elba is not being considered as a replacement to Daniel Craig.

For many years, the famous spy thriller franchise “James Bond” has drawn the attention of millions of fans from all over the world, to the extent that being a Bond girl is sought after, not to talk of being Bond himself. It’s not a secret that many actors would love to see themselves in Bond’s shoes for a turn or two – Daniel Craig played James Bond across five movies in the franchise – but only one of them will be offered the role.

Idris Elba – Says Rumors Of His James Bond Casting Is “An Honor”

Bond’s death in the latest movie means that the future holds a much younger Bond – even perhaps a look back at his earliest days before he became the man “with the license to kill” and “the man with the golden gun”. In a recent interview, the Golden Globe winner, 50, put the rumors to rest by declaring that there’s no truth in any of the rumors saying he’s been cast as the next James Bond.

“I love the Bond franchise, I’m very close to the producers,” Elba told The Guardian. “We were all kind of laughing about the rumors because they are just that.”

He continued: “I can’t speak for [the producers], but from my perspective, there’s never been any sort of truth to any of it. It’s a compliment, and it’s an honor — but it’s not a truth.” However, Elba’s name has been mixed in with the James Bond franchise long before Craig’s final act as Bond. It was initially sparked by Sony Pictures chief executive Amy Pescal, when a leaked email revealed that she suggested Elba should play “the next Bond.”

At this point, no one’s been cast and the talks haven’t turned serious, according to some insiders.

Barbara Broccoli, one of the franchise’s lead producers, confirmed that Elba’s name pops up whenever they’re discussing about the next Bond actor.

“Well, we know Idris, I’m friends with him, and he’s a magnificent actor,” she said in January 2022 in Deadline’s “Crew Call” podcast. “You know, it’s been part of the conversation, but it’s always difficult to have the conversation when you have someone in the seat.”

If I was asked to throw in my support for any actor, I’d love to remind “James Bond’s” casting directors that Idris Elba looks good in a suit and he can expertly handle a gun.
