Jada Pinkett Smith Opens Up About Her Evolved Relationship With Will Smith

The internet had things to say when Jada Pinkett Smith revealed that she and Will Smith have been separated since 2016 and was heavily surprised when he referred to her as “wife” during last year’s heated Oscar moment.

For some reason, Jada became the unfaithful wife out to ruin her husband with hard-hitting revelations in “Worthy.”

This narrative couldn’t be farther from the truth, as the “Gotham City” actress actually still has a lot of love and respect for the father of her two kids, despite the changed nature of their relationship.

Jada Pinkett Smith – Says Titles Can “Make One Blind To Love”

One of the recurring themes in Jada’s 400-page memoir “Worthy” is how she has learned to see titles like son, father, husband, daughter, uncle and the rest differently.

In a new chat with Broadway star Cynthia Erivo on 29 October, the actress unpacked what it means to love someone beyond any of these titles.

During their chat, which took place at London’s Southbank Center, Jada kept coming back to the idea of titles and how they might hinder how we see and respond to people near us.

For example, Jada has been in a 20-year relationship with “Suicide Squad” star Will Smith, and throughout that time their feelings for one another has matured from friends, to romance, to marriage, and now, beyond that.

Talking to the crowd of people present, she shared that though her separation from Will may not be a “divorce on paper,” she and Will had simply grown tired of trying to work things out. “We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together,” she told PEOPLE at the time. “We’ve just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”

She also did touch on the fact that there’s been some, or a lot, of confusion around her communications of her marriage from media reports and fans alike, saying, “Even with all this craziness going on, people misunderstanding my communication about my relationship with Will, one of the biggest lessons [I’ve had] and why Will is such a guru for me is because I’ve had to learn to love him unconditionally.”

When Jada came clean with all of her “truths,” people naturally expected Will to react in a somewhat hostile way. However, he showed the world that it was all love when he supported her during her book promo tour.

She continued: “I’ve had to learn to love him beyond the title of ‘husband’ and all the expectations and all the romanticism that comes with that, and learn to love him as he is – with it all. With his bright light, and the shadow, and love him right there. He did not come to this Earth just to be my husband.”
